The 7D uses a mini-HDMI port, and it doesn't include the cable. Someone said they're $40 at Radio Shack? Yeepers.

I just ordered one of these:
http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=102&cp_id=10242&cs_id=1024201&p_id=3645&seq=1&format=2

Might be good, might be junk, but at $5 I'll risk it. If anyone knows of one better, let us know.

Monoprice has the best reputation of any online cable maker/seller, AFAIK. I believe that they are regarded much more fondly by A/V enthusiasts than Monster (with its questionable pricing/marketing tactics (http://www.engadget.com/2008/03/03/audiophiles-cant-tell-the-difference-between-monster-cable-and/)).

Every cable I have ordered from monoprice has performed every bit as well as any other cable I've used with AV equipment.

x2 vote of confidence for Monoprice. OEM is pretty much the way to go when it comes to digital cables.

I ordered one just a couple days ago, might have it today. I'll let people know if it sucks lol but yeah, can't beat it for $5. Monoprice has always been solid for me.

I also ordered some XLR-1/4" shorty cables and adapters to plus a shotgun mic into the onboard mic port. Hopefully ML firmware will let me level it :-)

The cable is solid, but I recommend ordering at least three.

I've got a lot of HDMI and Mini-HDMI cables from MonoPrice. All good.

I've seen the miniHDMI to HDMI convertors at Fry's for less than $10 if you want to get it from a retail store.

Monoprice are fantastic with great quality and THE cheapest prices. They ship quickly and at reasonable cost. I can't say a bad word about anything they do.

An interesting secret about HDMI cables...there are only 3 or 4 companies who make the cables and another handful or so that terminate them. For the most part there is no (and in some cases, literally no) difference between them.

Monoprice is a fantastic company and there cables are great quality physically at junk quality pricing.

I used to order from them. No problems. I prefer using a cable with "big" connectors, and an adapter like this: http://www.monoprice.com/products/product.asp?c_id=104&cp_id=10419&cs_id=1041909&p_id=3653&seq=1&format=2

First of all, why would you want to do that? Second of all, HDMI cables don't control the signal resolutions. You have to set them yourself. But an HDMI 1.3a or even an HDMI 1.2 cable should be able to handle up to 1080p or 1080i. So just about any quality HDMI cable will provide all of the bandwidth that you need.

What I'm asking is if these cables are so that 7d can be used as a deck for displaying footage.

It is a cable. Read operating instructions for your camera for available resolutions.

I understand that.

I am asking what this cable is useful for.

You know what? never mind. Sheesh.

The cable is mainly for connecting an HD monitor. You could also use it to connect to a computer to capture/record the HDMI video signal.

The HDMI port on the camera is for output, not input. I'm not sure why you'd want to use the 7D as a deck; if you're trying to view footage that you shot with it, then you can play that footage on camera from the memory card.

I meant like a Play deck. To Play footage recorded in camera.

Dude, its so you watch the footage stored on the 7d on an external screen instead of the one built into the camera. I don't get what's not to get.

Exactly. There's a button on the camera marked with a standard "play" icon (the little triangle) that will allow you to review your footage (and stills) right there on the camera. You can then use the HDMI port to connect an external monitor. The monitor will work when you're recording footage and when you're reviewing footage.

Thanks, I just wanted to make sure it was what I thought it was.
Just ordered a six footer from monoprice.

I'll ask this question again in hopes someone might know. Can you copy your h.264 Master onto your CF card with your computer/card reader then place your CF card in your 7D and play the edited file back on your HDLCD for all to see in its full resolution with audio?

Is this possibly a way to deliver a CA to a local TV station and/or play your work for client approval?

I have tried a couple of things and can't figure out how to render a movie that the camera can play. You need a movie file and also a .THM file, and I don't know what goes into the .THM file. Perhaps there is (or will be) an export plug-in for NLEs that renders 7D/5D-playable files? But just rendering an h.264 .mov out of CS4.1 didn't work.

Thank you Barry for giving it the old college try...it would sure be a nice feature.

And it might still be possible, but someone's gonna have to dig around to figure out how; it wasn't immediately obvious.
