View Full Version : 7D inexpensive zoom lens option?

Hi,

Since I video a fair amount of surfing, I was wondering what fairly inexpensive zoom lens options are available for the 7D. For example, on my 16mm motion picture camera, I can adapt an old 300mm Canon FD zoom lens to it and get a great zoom (becomes a 600mm on 16mm) and a good picture quality for not too much money.

Since I know the FD lens are not a option on the 7D, what are some other options? Is it true that you can adapt older Nikon lens to the 7D much in the same way I do with the FD lens to my 16mm camera?

I have read that you can adapt FD lens to the 7D, but you have to shoot them above a f5.6 and in good light. What are the consequences of doing this? With filming surfing, I generally shoot at an f8 to f 11 and want lots of depth of field and it's usually in good light, so could I use the FD adapter in that case?

Thanks for any info.

Yes you can put Nikon lenses on the Canon. You don't really want to adapt FD lenses if you can avoid it, as FD lenses require an optical element in the adapter in order to be able to focus to infinity.

You can adapt Nikon or M42 lenses or use EOS lenses on the Canon 7D.

And they will have a bit of the super-tele effect because the 7D has what they call a 1.6x crop, so if you're used to what a lens looks like on a full-frame 35mm still camera, they'll appear to be 60% more telephoto on the 7D (so that 300mm lens will look like a 480mm on the 7D).

I'd just look at slow Canon lenses from older kits. I can't believe how cheap non-L lenses go. Hit ebay, keh.com, etc. and remember the crop factor and plus you get autofocus. There is lots of stuff out there.

Look at Canon or Canon EFS mount Sigma and Tokina, there are plenty. Make sure it has auto-focus. I don't recommend going for the FD if you do surfing photos. Fast AF is a must for that. A Canon 90-200mm USM would be a good, cheapish choice.

Only for stills, though, since the camera can't continuously autofocus while recording video.

This kinda thing is why I think it's crazy to spend 10k accessorizing this camera for video.

I am not sure the autofocus is important, it is not really usable for video, especially with moving targets.
