So this was our first proper run at using the Canon 7d for a job and WOW. Seriously impressed with the picture quality we got from these cameras. Hands down better IQ than HVX and EX1 for me.

Shot mostly at iso1600 its a LOT cleaner than either the EX1 and HVX in the dark venue situation. I also found the 7D was better for grading than the EX1 footage which suprised me.

The best thing for me is that because it is so small we could take it right into the crowd and get some really unique energetic shots right in the mosh pit! Would not of been able to do this with the EX1 or HVX.

I was concerned with rolling shutter/jello etc as we shoot handheld with no support rigs but I found it not to be a problem, its there but not enough to bother me.

I would say this was a pretty extreme 'test' for this camera - strobing lights, hotter than a sauna, and trying to focus and frame a shot using the LCD while getting kicked in the head.

It passed most of the tests but we did have both cameras overheat. Mine went after about an 1hr 10mins. I had the warning light, shot through it until it turned itself off and had to wait a few minutes for it to cool down. I took the battery out to try and get some air in...dont know if it helped!

Not sure how far into the gig the other camera overheated, but he just went outside to change lens and came back in without it happening again.

Luckily we were shooting 'non-sync' stuff by then, could of been a BIG problem in a different scenario. But saying that, this is the hottest situation I can think we will film in and we had live view on constantly and were changing between 1080p25 and 720p50 a lot.

Lenses used:
Sigma 10-20mm f4-5.6
Canon 17-55mm f2.8
Tokina 11-16mm f2.8
Sigma 30mm f1.4
Sigma 50mm f1.4

This was shot and edited in 24hrs for the band to approve and upload within 48hrs as this was the first date of their tour and they wanted a live video to help promote the following dates.

Workflow - dump cards on laptop on drive home (I wasnt driving! )
transfer to iMac when home - 3am
log and name all files and set to convert to AppleProRes - 6am (this included logging and transfering all the EX1 and HVX footage)
sleeeeeeeeep - 6am - 8:30am
wait for ProRes files to finish converting - 9:am
first cut done - 9:00am - 6:00pm
rough grade - 6:00pm - 8:00pm
offline for band to view - 10:00pm (less than 24hrs from filming!)

Then I had a few changes to make the next day, tidy the grade etc... all in all I found the workflow very slick!

Lovin the last shot getting shoved around in the pit, haha, quality.

Looks like the 7D held up pretty bloody well.

Wow, I was really impressed with that video. Love the shots from ground level with the crowd right in your face. Almost had a high shutter speed look to it matched with the strobes, made for a very high-energy look. Definitely one of the best non-hollywood music videos produced I've seen, and it was taped in an uncontrolled environment to boot! Great job!

If you wouldn't mind breaking down the shot list for us so we know what camera shot what, that would be great.

thanks for the comments!

We shot at 1/100 - 1/250. I like the look of high shutter for this sort of thing...

A rough shot breakdown:

All the stuff in the actual crowd was 7D with the sigma 10-20. We had a pag light mounted on this camera to light the crowd.

All the footage from the rear of the venue was shot on the HVX

Tight head shots were generally shot from the press pit with 50mm lens on the 7D (shots 4+6 for example)

Any low level crowd shots looking out at the crowd/crowd surfers would be 7D in press pit

All the shots from press pit pointing at stage are 7D, mix of wideangle, 30mm and 50mm

Slow motion wide on the stage (bass player spins around) was 7D with 11-16

I used as much 7D as I could come to think of it as it looked so much nicer than the EX1s! Had the 7D on stage for maybe 3 songs and used a high percentage of shots from it compared to the EX1s that were there all gig.

EX1 shots that I can describe are the slow motion drum shot on the crash, and the slowmotion shot of the singer shouting near his keyboard looking out...and a few random crowd shots.

Sorry if that doesnt help its hard to describe with so many cuts!

Awesome work. I'm starting to find out that the audience really doesn't care, or even notice the Jello. Just keep shooting clean images and tell the story as best as you can.

personally i think that footage rips the hvx up. I mean those pit shots just wouldnt be possible at that quality without the 7D, those are ground breaking shots. This is a landmark vid. Congrats

Thank God was not Shakira!! I would have stop the video immediately. What a test for the 7D >_<' hahahaha!!! There are few places that I can think of that would make a more difficult to shoot situation than being on the middle of a pit. Freaking awesome shots man! Very inspiring too. Great work and ultra fast delivery. One of the best videos I've seen so far shot partially with the 7D.

Thank God was not Shakira!! .
Some guys like looking at hot Latinas that can shake what they got and some pasty young boys going wild in a circle elbowing each other... but I don't judge!

No one (well apart from people that look at it purely from a camera analysis point of view!) has mentioned any jello, any rolling shutter strobes (theres alot of them!) or anything camera related!

band + label happy = me happy

They were all just stoked on how sharp and 'crystal clear' it looked

Thanks! I didnt go in the pit myself, instead I put the new guy in... he never filmed a gig befoe this. Hopefully I havent scar'd him for life as he got some great shots.

Thank you kindly! Was very very tough for all involved. Normally we find ourselves a good safe spot but I really wanted to capture what it was like to be there. So put us in the audiences shoes... would never of been able to do it with a 'real' camera!

I wouldnt say no to a bit of Shakira filming... bet her shakes would test the 7D jello more than any amount of mosh kids can!

Phenomenal Job...Absolutely amazing. I shoot as well with the HVX/EX combo. Added the 5d early summer and 7d last week. Unbelievable footage these little guys offer...and the discrete factor, you nailed that. The video was a hell of an advertisement for these cameras.

Hat's off

Fantastic work! I saw some footage with a 5D covering NIN a while back, but that totally pales in comparison to how visceral this feels. I've got a metal concert I'm bringing my 7D to, but I'm not sure I've got the cajones to jump into the pit with it like you guys did.
