Someone asked a question like this in the Vegas Threads, but I want to know this for FCP. Forgive me if the answer to this is obvious, but:::

Is there a way that I can get FCP to take my 1920x1080 prores video (captured from 1440x1080 hdv) and use only a cropped portion of the video in a 960x720 or smaller down-rezzed video WITHOUT scaling it down? That is, shouldn't it be possible to just grab the pixel-count that comprises 960x720 (etc) from the 1920x1080 video, and just not capture all the other pixels (i.e., the entire original image)? I don't need the entire image. Ideally I could have some kind of 720 "crop box".

I know how to downrez to get the whole video in 960x720 (which involves a scalling down). But I want to only take a portion of the video (the middle of the frame).

Any thoughts are appreciated!

Not exactly sure what you mean but basically you would just scale it to whatever size you want to- that can be full 1:1 or any portion you want to. Do this with the motion tab/scale parameter.

Maybe I can make my meaning clearer this way.

Take two rectangles, one bigger than the other. The first is the 1080 rectangle, and the second is the 720 rectangle.

What I want to do is, essentially, impose the 720 rectangle on the 1080 rectangle, and have just the image that results from that. Scaling down the 1080 image won't achieve this because it scales the whole image.

If I were to simple take the 1080 clip and drop into a 720 sequence, the whole image would get scalled down. And then I'd have to scale back up, which, I think would result in loss of quality. Hope this clarifies where I'm coming from.

Like I said- you can control exactly how much of the image fits into a particular frame. If you drop one into another it will automatically scale to fit as close to the entire frame without cropping as possible. If you want it to be exactly 100% you just reset the slider on the scale control to 100%.

1080 into a 720 frame at 100 percent will result in approximately 30-50% of the frame being cropped out along the edges.

720 into a 1080p frame at 100% will result in a black box around the entire image of a similar percentage. But this is easy to do in your FCP sequence so as Nike says- Just Do it.
