A friend of mine just began shooting a film and is live capturing from the DVX100B to FCP. He has had recent problems with the live captured footage and tried many different approaches at achieving this, but is still running into problems. He is running Final Cut Pro 6.0.6.

Approach 1.

- DVX is set to 24pA for recording
- FCP capture settings are Advanced Pulldown

After live capture when he tries to remove the pulldown manually it puts the file offline and it completely disappears from the computer when attempting to find it via the finder (running os x).

---------------

Approach 2.

- Same settings as Approach 1 above.

He captures the same footage through tape but the frame rate still remains 29.97. I can't think of a reason as to why the pulldown would not work when capturing through the tape with those settings. I mean non-drop frames yes, but no errors occurred.

---------------

Approach 3.

- DVX is set to 24pA for recording
- FCP capture settings: 23.98 Anamorphic

He captures footage from tape without the pulldown, manually removes the pulldown afterwards (in fcp via Tools > "Remove Advanced Pulldown") and the frame rate changes to 23.98, which plays fine in a 23.98 sequence. So this worked, but only from the tape, not live capture. I wouldn't see a reason for this not to work otherwise, other than drop frames error like I stated before.

---------------

Approach 4.

- Same settings as Approach 3 above

He live captures footage with the same settings as he used for capturing from tape as seen in number 3 above. Some files still go offline when the manual pulldown is used, but some files work when the pulldown is applied. I don't understand that.

---------------

I have told him that my suspicion is that FCP doesn't know how to handle putting marks on a digital signal during live capture for the pulldown at the same time that it is removing the frames. Or he needs to be shooting at another frame rate from the dvx during live capture in order for the pulldown to work in FCP. I'm very confused myself and was wondering if someone could please help us in live capturing 24pA footage from the dvx100B.

Thank you.
