has any one any experience of this lens..

for RnG use..

looks 'quite' well made

Focus stays static position during zoom (one FF position - great)

exeptional range

potential for hardmount due to area between focus and zoom being static

18 is a great start point 200 is quite enough

16-9 adapter required

there is also "16-85mm f/3.5-5.6G"

seems like nothing similar from canon or 3rd parties?

There is a Canon 18-200mm. It's EF-S, though.

There is a Sigma 18-200mm, as well. Also EF-S

And lastly Tamron makes an 18-270mm. EF-S mount.

And just for fun...look at that extension!

Something of a more serious note: I just read some reviews and it seems many of these superzooms have VERY short focus throws. Like, 90 degrees or less (I believe the Tamron is 60!!). That is fine if you are using them for photography with autofocus enabled, but has some side effects for the video world.

Manually focusing, you'll have to be a demi-god to get something sharp past 150mm. Probably sooner than that. You'd have to resort to framing the shot before zooming, and using AF to find focus, then capturing your shot statically.

on the nikkor 18-200

from..
http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/18200/18200-focus.htm (!)

"Manual Focus Camming

This is a treat. People who have never used wide-range zooms may not appreciate this. Most wide range zooms manually focus way too fast at the wide end and painfully slow at the tele end.

The Nikon 18-200mm uses a clever non-linear cam in the focus mechanism so that it's easy to focus at any distance at any focal length. It works like it's supposed to, which is far better than other lenses. I appreciate this because I've used other lenses in the past which were a pain."

also check out that focus grip !

I think I think that is for the zoom. The focus grip is the tiny one on the end :engel017:

it would be good to know !

Even the small one looks better than the canon and stigma lenses

17-55mm F2.8 G AFS DX looks like it is a solid construction but costly with a 16-9 adapter

IM finding lenses not good for the 7d where a wide ap comes back into the equation

any more ideas??

teles arfe of course no worries, my 70-200 2.8 just got more awesome

canon 17-40 looks OK

canon
17-55 2.8 - shoddy construction
canon
17 - 85 too slow

18-55 comical construction
