I miss the old days of tape! I am a freelance DP, sometimes I produce. When clients asked for a window dub of the day's footage I would connect the betacam deck to a DVD burner ($200 from Best Buy) then hit play and record, set a kitchen timer, turn on the TV and open a beer.

Now with P2 what do I do? Especially if I am not the one who will be editing the final video, meaning I won't be making money on the post so why should I ingest it and take up space? I appreciate any techniques people have. Also, how does the original clip's time coder correlate to the TC after it is in FCP? In other words, if the client wants a shot at certain numbers from a time coded DVD, will that relate to the TC in the timeline?

Thanks!

Sure you can use the timecode generator filter in FCP. Or do the same in Compressor.

You can play P2 material out from the camera and down-convert to a dvd burner, for that real-time tape like transfer. You'll just need to figure out how to add the TC window.
If you don't own a P2 camera and need a P2 deck, there is one - a deck kind-of. Panasonic makes it.
