I export a full res QT mov, and import it into Compressor, using the "best quality" DVD tool. This creates two files, an M2V and AC3 which are then imported to DVD SP. Set up SP to make a SD DVD from these two files. If you don't want menus or anything, just set the start point to Chapter 1, and burn.
I was not happy with the results of exporting a quicktime file and then importing into compressor. So I did a little research on this on the web and came up with this work flow that (sort of) works for me: (I say sort of because it can take up alot of space and is time consuming)
1. export a quicktime file of the sequence (not sure if it makes a difference if it's self contained or not)
2. Drag the HD file to a DV50 sequence. The sequence should be set up to as close to the original settings as possible other than it's in dv50 instead of HD.
3. Export a self contained of the SD sequence
4. take the self contained into compressor and be sure in the inspector that the settings asre correct

that's kind of an uneccesary step. If you simply use QuickTime conversion and choose the same settings for the export it has the same function as making a new sequence.
The only way this could be of benefit would be if you decided to pan and scan or change the aspect ratio coming from HD to SD. But a properly setup 1080 or 720 HD 16:9 sequence should scale perfectly to standard definition 16:9 anamorphic.
