So I got my 7D yesterday (Edmonton, Canada) and I'm completely new to video on dSLR. I wonder what camera settings you guys would normally use for video?

Also, what kind of software I will need to get to view and edit the HD files on my PC? Videos I saw so far are awesome and that is quite inspiring, so I'd like to get started.... Any advice and info will be appreciated. I do realise its a bit early (I just started to read the camera's manual), but if someone already played with their 7D I'd like to hear about your cam's setup.

My lens line so far is: Canon 18-55mm IS; Canon 50mm 1.8; Canon 28mm 1.8; Canon 85mm 1.8; Canon 24-105mm 4.0 L; Canon 70-200mm 4.0 IS L; Canon 135mm 2.0 L

nice line up of lenses... well since you are working on PC(sorry) I would use Adobe CS4 on mac Final Cut 3 of coarse... don't know about settings though as I am new to this as well and my cam isn't here yet...

nice line up of lenses. Thanks! I came into dSLR for the stills in the first place, so invested in good glass a bit.

So in terms of the software - the files ad codecs used by 7D are nothing too funky, correct? Any solid video software package should be able to handle, right?

On the other hand, I'm not too sure at this point how much video I will be doing, so currently looking for something relatively simple and easy to learn in terms of the software. Something not too time consuming in terms of learning...

they are basic H264 format which is nice for me because most of the online film fest that I enter demand this format... do you use and photo editing programs right now... Adobe premiere IMO is very user friendly... it can be deep if you like to dive though...

I have CS3 right now. Never did any video editing before. Thanks for the info, I'll check out Premiere!

I'm having all sorts of trouble playing the native AVCHD MOV h.264 files on my dual core Vista64 machine with a new install of Premiere CS4.1. I would say you should prepare yourself for some major headaches that will likely end in the purchase of an i7 machine or the use of Neoscene to transcribe into AVIs that you can deal with. So far (for me) the workflow has been a total PIA and I don't even have my camera yet....
