Listen, I know everyone's foaming at the mouth about "which lens is right for me" and all that. But I think renting might be a great solution which many haven't considered.

Both of these sites have a huge range of lenses for rent, including the top-level "L" series glass. Have a shoot and want the 85mm f1.2L lens? Rent it for a week for $75.00 and forget about buying it for…over $2,000.

Lenses are where pros spend their money, and they make the difference between "good" work and "great" work, for the most part. Get the best you can for each job by renting.

(And I am in no way affiliated with either of the above companies.)

I've rented gear on 2 different occasions from LensRentals and can testify that it's an excellent service that offers great value and customer support. Their site is well laid-out and informative and their prices can't be beat, at least not compared to my local camera rental house. The local place also requires a deposit whereas LensRentals does not. Overall it's an excellent place both for testing potential purchases (I rented a 5D MKII from them for a week to see if I should buy one or not) and also supplementing your own pre-existing kit with great lenses. I really can't say enough good things about it, I love this company!

Jeez I sound like an ad. It's just very refreshing to not have rental experiences suck.

I will possibly use this place first before I buy any lens, and just work in the rental costs into the eventual lens price.

Thanks

I've used lensrentals.com before as well, to get a 5dm2. Everything went swimmingly with the transaction and shipping.

Have any of you ever gotten a lens from either that wasn't EX++ before? Well, optically and mechanically anyway. I could care less about scratches on the barrel.
