It's definitely a nice looking rig when completely assembled. I just wonder how long it's gonna be until he misses his servo zoom lens for ENG assignments. I worked in TV news for 6 years, and I would certainly not want to be covering spot news, sporting events, and daily packages with something like that. For special projects, most definitely, but not everyday assignments.

I agree, for ENG he'd be better off with the Canon 24-105 f4.0 USM IS.

Of course there IS the whole 1.6x crop factor with that too....

Cute rig, but how realistc is this setup??:
1. The mattebox may vignette from approximately 22mm, while the lens used starts at 10mm? Did I miss anything here?
2. Where is the audo feed going, from the audio monitoring output from H4N to the Sony input (receiver or transmitter ??) ?
Could you enlighten me....?

Genus GWMC mattebox cuts off at about 16 to 17mm on full frame 35mm (5DmkII). The 7D is 1.6x crop so actually a 10mm is close to 16mm. Hence pretty good coverage of that zoom with the Genus. No other mattebox I've used goes so wide, its amazing.

The audio from the radio mic should be cabled into the Zoom h4n, apologies. The audio is then recorded on the Zoom and a feed is sent to the camera to give a better sync track than you would get just using the camera mic.

How about the 17-55 2.8? i think that would me a decent lens for this setup.

I'd be taking that french flag off to get better audio pick-up myself.

Uh, no offense, and maybe I'm crazy, but how do you plan on doing ENG with the record time limit on the 7D? You only get 4gigs at a time, what about interviews?

You have to quickly button on/off between questions. Not a problem.

Don't you have to slate the audio?

Ahh, Ok. Wouldn't work for me, since sometimes a single response to a question can be 20 mins long... but sounds good for you.

You just need a big Zacuto mallet and $10k in kit and accessories to make that 7d a really poor substitute for a real ENG rig.

It's possible to sync without a slate (one could just snap their fingers on camera).

It's also possible to use something like pluraleyes to autosync.

And its also possible (as he mentioned in the video) to use a special cable to record straight to the camera through the H4n. AGC is still present, however.

I didn't mean a literal slate...more of a sharp sound to sync with. Seems that would be a real distraction in an interview.

Pluraleyes is gr8 for folks on FCP but those of us on Windows seem to be out of luck AFAIK.

If you're going to feed the H4n str8 into the camera, then wouldn't a mic do just as well? Doesn't that defeat the purpose of the H4n? Man...who thought AGC was a good idea?

PluralEyes is being ported to Windows NLEs. First up is Vegas 9.

That's good news! Might have guessed I'm running PPro CS4.1. ;-)

Go to their forum and ask for CS4.1 support. I have, but the more of us who ask, the more likely it'll move up on their list.

Yeah....sounds a little crazy but i have done this during interviews with the 5D and everything turns out fine.
