just a quick edit of a couple clips

A rainy but lovely and perfectly overcast day to shoot under a bridge with a bunch of homless people looking on and really into what was going on. Some of our entourage was sitting right next to them and talking about what we were doing and asking em if they needed anything and if they wanted to get in some group shots. Very cool all ready. The results... considering what it is, AWESOME!!!!

T1i with the humble yet badass Canon 50mm f1.8. Used the twist trick to keep the aperture locked. Used exposure lock to keep ISO 100-200. EVERYONE ON SET WANTS TO BY VIDEO DSLRS NOW! LOL ...too bad they wont really know much more than which side of the camera points at people :)

Moral of the story: Just go out and shoot!
I was second guessing the T1i desicion while waiting for the 7D but now I iz happy!

Also shot at 30p with the music sped up to 125%. Then placed on a 24p timeline and played footage back at 80% which gives it just a hint of slow-mo which I think works great with the song.

OH I ALOMST FORGOT. The artist is an old friend from back in my music days. We're basically like family. BUT! You should have seen his face when I pulled out a still camera and I said this is what we are using. HE ALMOST shi* A BRICK, I thought he was gonna toss me onto oncoming traffic. He's fairly savy and will only shoot Digital with a 35mm adapter. When I played back the first shot, he was ready to go to BestBuy.

Good job! Give an artist any brush or whatever brand of oils, it wont matter.

This one video alone makes me think that the T1i dethrones the D90 for most convincing in-camera "film look."

Nice work Johnny! Pretty awesome output from an $800 entry-level. What's the bitrate on that guy?

Nik Manning

Yes what is the datarate of the T1i?

Smart move. You can sell the T1i and get the 7D when it's time.

Thnx guys, just looked at details on a bunch of clips and it looks like a variable bitrate averaging somewhere around 26-27mbps. That's at 720-30p. I havn't shot at 1080-20p because I don't believe 20p is video, IT'S JUST A REALLY FRIKIN' FAST 2megapixel STILL camera LOL

Solid work. You're right, we keep thinking more about our next camera than the camera we already have in our hands...

Very, very nice Johnny. Looks great. Is this just the natural light under the bridge with no reflectors or supplemental lighting?

...still don't understand how she was able to change clothes so quickly from one shot to the next. :-) :-)

Video looks good so far. But I'm diggin that tune. She's looks nice...sounds very good. Music gave me a sort of old Isley Brothers feel to it...smooth.

@ f64manray - Yeah just natural light. Beautifuly overcast rainy day, just perfect, couldn't ask for more! I had a silver car windshield reflector with me just in case LOL

For every one who thinks T1i is not as good as 7D your clip is a perfect example that it can be a great tool when used properly here is another great music video made with the T1i

http://vimeo.com/5603639

There is a lot of potential from the T1i and you got the good pin hack on the lens to really get the work done. I think the difference between a ( 7D and a Zoom H2n parallel sound ) and a T1i with the zoom, is only a frame rate choice and full HD. I believe you could have the T1i hard to beat for what it's worth. For music videos it's a great tool.

For myself I dont really need full HD since 720 60P is perfect for me ( using slow motion when needed). I actually think your trick 20% slower was really clever and subtle. It gave to your piece that dream state feeling which made it special.

Great work,

Never underestimate your potential with the tools you have.

Nice work! The only thing that kept me from buying one was the limited manual controls while in video mode. You did a great job with it JC!

Was getting your singers to sing at a different speed a challange?

Hehe - Visugeek is fast on the 'modify' function.

:) modify button is like life... it gives you second chances..

anyway, I'm like JC here, while waiting for the 7D to arrive in my country next week I'm also getting used to the form factor using the nikon D5000.

I have a question, since I'll be modifying my rails to fit the DSLRs, I want to know if the distance from bottom to center of lens of the eos line is the same.

Say I have an old 300D, can i use it as a stand in for the 7D to configure basplate height for the 7D?

sorry this is off topic. But we're nikon users in the studio so not so familiar with canon.

I don't know if snoop dogg's budget would cover that either ;). I've AC'd on some of his shoots unfortunately.

Just the kit lens, 18-55 IS zoom. It's ok, but I stayed with the 50 to keep it sharp and shallow. Just trying to keep it slick looking.
EDIT: I shot wides with the HVX, I was too afraid of aliasing from the T1i to shoot wide. But looking at some of the wider T1i shots, I think it would have been ok. I have a music video next month with a lot of dancing so I have to shoot wide shots. If I don't have a 7D by then I think I'll use the T1i with the 18-55.

Was getting your singers to sing at a different speed a challange?
Yeah they freaked the first time they heard it. I emailed him a copy of the modified song so he could get used to it and asked him to send it to her.... of course that didn't happen, I guess it was too much like homework.
25% faster doesn't look that overcranked but musically it's much faster. The singer's parts were easier, her cadance is slower and smoother. The rapping on the other hand is pretty quick and it's gonna be a bitch to sync up cause it was just so sloppy at that speed, fortunately it has an extensive narrative section to cover up performances.

Yes, Modify, the late night posters friend! : )

Thanks for the info JC, I thought that might have been tough for the talent. They pulled it off really well from what you've posted so far. Good luck with the rap syncing.
