Hey guys,
Am looking at the Cavision DSLR rig and see that it has a 6x viewfinder... with that magnification would we still need a monitor for critical focus?

That eyepiece is simply a viewfinder for the LCD. It is only going to magnify what the LCD on the camera is capable of displaying, which compared with a decent external monitor, isn't much. It's essentially designed to make shooting with an hdslr closer to a traditional video camera with an eyepiece.

Take a look at some of the smaller 5.6", 7", and 8" monitors from manufacturers like ikan, Marshall, and Manhattan LCD. I recently had an ikan v5600 5.6" LCD sent to me for review and I like it much better for shooting and focusing as compared to the LCD on the camera. When you have a resolution like 1024x600 crammed into a small 5.6" LCD, like that in the ikan v5600, the apparent resolution of the image looks much sharper than when viewed on built in LCD's. It serves as a client monitor too.

Hi Keith,

Does that Ikan provide any sort of aids - zebras, exposure assist, focus assist, etc?

It doesn't, but Marhsall's V-LCD70P has false color, 1:1 pixel view, and peaking

Actually I've been looking around at used monitors, Ikan, Manhattan, cheap ones.
Only purpose I want it for is to avoid neck strain.

Saw a bunch all around $200 or $300 just that I don't know how heavy they are or quality or which models to avoid. Any recommendations?

I second that question. I would like a 3.5 to 5" LCD that I could mount on top just to use as a viewfinder for framing etc, not focus. But can't really find anything. I don't want an expensive monitor like the Ikan or Marshal.

Purchased that monitor for a friend and used it last week (he is from Africa). It is a very nice monitor and one of the best choices at a $1000. It did have some trouble with the 5D switching from live view to recording (when it takes the signal hit).

I'm really interested in the IKAN 5600 w/the 7D. Would like to hear from folks who use one when the 7D's start coming in. Interested in a small monitor.
