I have an EX3, and my client owns an EX1. On a shoot yesterday I was trying to put his camera settings into my camera. We put his settings onto a card, then went to load them into my camera. Every time I tried to load the settings I got an error message. Am I missing something, or is it not possible to take settings from an EX1 and put them on an EX3.

I believe ex1 settings and ex3 settings aren't interchangeable. I know for a fact the picture profiles aren't (which are included with the camera data). Ex1 profiles on an ex3 will look drastically different, so I'm guessing they aren't interchangeable.

It strikes me as strange that the profiles can't be exchanged between a 1 and a 3. Guts wise, they are pretty much the same camera.
