sorry this is probably a really stupid question.

but to use the popular cannon 50mm f1.4 lens do you need an adaptor?

Yes if the lens is not a micro four thirds lens made by either Panasonic or Olympus, you need an adapter. You even need an adapter from the regular four thirds lenses to micro-four thirds.

Note: when you use the adapter with all non-four thirds lenses you lose auto-focus and electronic control of the lens. This means that you can't change the aperture very easily on lenses that don't have an aperture ring, and most new lenses dont.

Here is the official list of supported lenses + adapters from Panasonic:

http://panasonic.jp/support/global/cs/dsc/connect/g1.html

I hope this helps.

thanks so much, just wanted to make sure i order exactly what im going to need...

im not worried about auto focus or any thing im wanting the diffrent lens for the DOF and low light capabilities and i nearly always shoot every thing manual focus anyway so im hoping it wont be to big of a change going to the gh1.
