How exactly does one "gather funds?"

How exactly does one "gather funds?"

1) Selling old equipment (Canon XL2 in my case)
2) Asking people around to give you money or help you financially in some matters (like renting good lights)
3) Saving on everything so you can get as much as you can from your paycheck.

The list goes on and on and is only limited by your imagination ;)
