I like how the header says "Everything's about to change"

Dudes..... it already has.

But I can see how some old school folks would rather jump on the digital bandwagon with a company like ARRI. And that price point, while significantly higher than a RED one, is still not bad for what it claims to do.

I am still behind on all the new RED news and specs but what makes this better then the RED besides the Arri name? They both have 35mm sensors.

And the Epic will have an even larger sensor (not that I think a bigger sensor is that much a big deal at this point).

My guess is that they are playing catch up. I think the whole industry is getting to the point where they can produce a larger sensor. What will be more important is the latitude, whether the images are raw, the efficiency of the codec and the workflow.

Thats almost like saying "What makes the F35 better than the RED besides the CineAlta name? They both have 35mm sensors"

Arri has been around forever, their D21 is already an amazing camera. It looks like these are the new D21s, in which case, expect to see a lot of people very excited at the lower price point.

I'm glad cost is your seemingly only deciding factor. I'd be stupid not to know or mention how much Red and DVXuser are intertwined, so I expect such comments.

From my standpoint this is most expected, if not overdue. The big difference here is how Arri is going to deliver. Are they going to do the 'normal' thing and announce a product and deliver on schedule with customers waiting for backorders, or the 'Red' thing, and we'll be getting our hands on these cameras in two- three years, along with backorders. This may sound snarky, but it's not Red's reputation to deliver on time. And it's not my fault for that, or my duty to overlook it. We'll see how it shakes out. But don't think RED was going to hold the lead in this arena (digital cinema cameras under 100k) when other companies have had major R&D departments in full swing for a comparably much longer time. Now that 'Red' has called out the competition, we will see a fierce answer, and I am all for competition. 70k is not much for a camera... so I have no reason to discount the advantages or disadvantages of a new camera.

Actually, Arri seems to have done exactly what RED gets slammed for: They showed up at IBC with a mock up under glass.

Exactly... we'll see how they deliver. Although who's to say what they really have as operational.

heres one thing it will not do that a RED one has done. ( and this comes from a RED lover)

It wont overheat and shut down in the middle of a shot, and stay off for 25 min. i can basically guarantee that. I will never forget the look on the producers face. i never want to see that again.

Also with a 35 sized sensor and only 3.5k, it will have nice big pixels and a better DR and SN ratio. This is all Good stuff.

I really want Red to abandon the 5-9k cameras and just make something with 3k (like they promised) but S35 sized so the big pixels will make for a nice clean wide dynamic range 1080P.

I've never had that problem. Last time I was with one, it decided to pop up "Internal Fault Errors" all the time, and no one knew what was causing it. That and it would power off when we tried to playback on it.

And that was only last year.

And you know, I've read about the Weisscam, but I've never actually actively talked about it before.

I've never had the shut down problem either. One time, on an earlier build, we couldn't get the fan to shut down. But it's all good now.

I remember looking at the d20 footage a couple of years ago at NAB. I was pretty impressed.

One of the features is "film look." I wonder if that actually means anything.
