Well, I took the plunge and bought an HPX170 from B&H. And with the $500 rebate, I also got a second 16 GB P2 card, "E" series. My credit card's a little warm, but it'll cool down, eventually.

My question is this: do you think my 170 will need the firmware update to use the "E" series cards, or is it new enough to not need this update? What series card comes with the 170 in the box?

And, I'm new to this P2 medium, so I'm confused about the "E" series and "A" series business. What's the difference? Why is a 16 GB "E" series so much cheaper than a 16 GB "A" series? Are there any more series cards?

Thanks. Looking forward to playing with it when it comes. (BTW, I've upgraded from a Canon XH-A1.)

There are a number of threads on the difference between the E series and the R or A series. Basically, the E series has a specific livetime based on the number of insertions.

If you received an E Series with the purchase, then there shouldn't be an issue.

Check your firmware in the 170.

What is it? It should be 1.10 I believe.

I didn't get it yet. I just ordered it. I'll check it once it arrives.

You may want to register the camera on Panasonic's Asset Support site. You can keep firmware current by checking that for any updates. You will find details in the documentation that comes with your camera. Good luck.
