Saw this on the REDuser forum. This just blows me away.

Interactive augmented reality on a computer using live video fed from your camera:

AND - this works on an iPhone!

My jaw literally dropped, and were it not for my masticular muscles, I'd be picking up my jaw off the floor. I'm so amazed, I know my imagination is limited with all the practical applications of this.

Yeah, the new Yelp iPhone app has a form of augmented reality in it. You can point the camera around and it shows you where restaurants are and stuff, in the view you're looking at.

Pretty awesome. It's combining tracking technology with real time feed. Simple concept, glad they're bringing it to light. I can only see it getting better, and be used for several applications.

Wartime application. Virtual Reality gaming. Maybe even driving to show big arrows on the road of where to go rather than the distracting GPS.

Integrating with a windshield HUD would be pretty awesome, but also expensive. Those systems take a lot of engineering to run well as it is. For the rest of it, those ideas have been in development for a while and we're starting to see some good results. There's one being developed for eyepiece application that can, among other things ID people (who are properl tagged) and bring up maps, diagrams, whatever associated with your current position. So it's getting there.

You and me both! WOW. I mean, seriously. I can't believe how far tracking has come just in a few short years. I mean, to be able to track while moving is huge. That's mindblowingly cool.

Yeah I used to work with tracking software at the Academy of Art, when i worked there years ago. Realviz matchmover, Boujou, and more recently Syntheyes.

Astounding that this is all happening in real time now. Just blew me away when I saw the initial video, but I was really floored when I saw the iPhone demo. It still astounds me, and it makes me feel a little old as well, knowing that this newer technology and its practical applications are beyond my imagination.

Speechless!

Regarding how much time of my life I wasted by tweaking and fiddling with Realviz and Boujou.

My jaw is still on the floor.

Awesome. I read a book called Rainbow's End by Vernor Vinge which was about this kind of technology. People had wearable computers and implanted contact lenses that could augment reality to absurd degrees, turning the landscape and people's appearances into whatever the viewer wanted. The end result was that not much attention was given to actual reality any more, which had its negatives as well as benefits (no more billboard or physical advertisements any more because targeted virtual ads projected onto surfaces were more effective). He got some flack from people who said it would never be possible by the year 2025. Now it seems we'll get there even sooner if the pace of innovation keeps up.
