It would be great to hear reports of other exhibitors... I heard Canon is showing off their hot line of HDV Cameras, along with some go-go girls!!

I check out ibc.org and read their "daily news".
The new Arri D21 line is indeed very exciting. They are rental items of course, but still affordable rental items compared to say just a few years ago. Much of the credit goes to RED of course for bringing down the price point. The new Arris are price competitive with the EPIC line, but at a premium. I wonder how the valuation of the dollar will affect all these new toys from Japan and Europe in the years to come.

So I am back from from the RAI now, in the hotel on my hard bed watching dutch TV, having just paid 19 euros for internet access.

That's a lot for internet! Thanks for the pics. :)

Did you say there was a scarlet there?

hoarp001

Yeah, I was mainly at the table with Jarred and the Epic. Jim had the Scarlet, I didn't really see it. Had a poke at the epic though. Full size connectors, none of that mini BNC or mini XLR.

Also saw the UniQ optics lenses today.

I am shocked, they are pretty good. Very well built, as heavy and as solid as any cine lens. Really worth considering if your in the market. They come in at about 5000 dollars each.

Zeiss Compact primes are not so impressive. The lens barrel looks and feels very plasticy. I dont know if it is or not, the scary german man assured me that it was, but it felt very cheap. The image is OK, but the actual tactile feel in hand is not so nice.

The new Cooke lenses look nice, very fast.

Oh also, the higher end Vocas matteboxes are amazing, Arri level for build quality. I was really suprised. The swing away mechanism is really nice, it uses a knob that you turn, which pulls it off the lens then swings it away in one motion, so you dont have to slide it forward, then swing it away. Whole thing is done with one motion. It also has integrated eyebrows which flap in and out inside the front shade.

Also, Panther tripod heads, also very good. Definatly worth looking at if you are thinking about an oconor or high end satchler system, the Panther heads are very well made and really smooth, with lots of levers and dials to fiddle with to get them behaving right.

Ermmmm what else.

Truelens in the UK are doing a very nice follow focus, rather than using a gear on the lens and a gear on the follow focus, the FF incorporates a belt that goes around the lens. Its hard to explain, but it is very solid and it will fit any lens. Really neat system. Fairly expensive at £600, but very universal and well made.

Thats all I can think of for the moment...

Oh also, the JVC 4k camera is terrible. Its just a block with a lens mount, no buttons or anything. I think it is still at prototype stage though. The image was horrible, looked like HDV on JVCs 4k monitor.

I think JVC make great VHS recorders, they should stick to it.

I also spoke to a guy from canon about the rumored new canon full frame cameras ;-)

did he say anything?....

Yeah.

:-P

BAAAaasically he said that no one but the top people at canon know whats going on, its all being kept very secret. I also told him that they would sell 20x more of these cameras if they could supply it with a Nikon mount, as no one really uses modern canon lenses as digital cinema lenses, nikon lenses are much better suited.

He said hell would freeze over before canon stick a nikon mount on one of their cameras.

Ha ha. True that. Thanks for the reports, particularly about the Uniq optics and Zeiss Compacts. First time I heard that the Compacts felt cheap - but coming from you I trust that there's merit to that evaluation. I wonder who makes Uniq lenses - I guess I can find that out on google later.

Yeah, it would be interesting to find out what kind of glass Canon actually intends to put on any APS-C sized video camera - probably something like their great 2/3" broadcast lenses but with a much more limited zoom range so that the lens isn't HUGE because of the larger APS sensor. They got a lot of things to work out I guess. I don't think we'll see such a camera until 2010 because theres so much to work out.

Yeah.

As far as I could gather, it sounds like its just gonna have an EOS mount like the 5D.

I would like to have another look at the compact primes, I suspect that the warmth from the camera made the lenses feel worse than they really are. Also I dont like how the front element slides in and out as you focus. Really drives it home that its a rehoused SLR lens....

but it has a VERY nice iris, and the Uniq lens I saw had a slightly wonky one (one of the blades was in the wrong place giving it a lopsided hexagon shape)

He said hell would freeze over before canon stick a nikon mount on one of their cameras. And so we have an opportunity for a machinist to ... make a few bucks ...
(but if you got the Canon lenses, they're better than Nikon any day)

Hey guys,

just so you know, it was not the Scarlet, but the EPIC-X that was shown @ IBC by Jim and Jarred, both Brains, and they are ready to go, but still not working and awaiting for the ASIC, to be fully functional.

You can find the Original thread about EPIC-X @ IBC here, you also find few fantastic 360's of the Brain itself and the Bomb EVF, just follow the link: http://reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?t=34492

My mistake.

From the words of Jim at reduser RECON:

"Details of the release schedule for EPIC and Scarlet coming sometime in October. We are taking our time so you won't be disappointed."
