Can anybody shine a light on what I'm doing wrong here...

- When a sequence clip has a transition effect on it like Cross Dissolve, I can't extend or contract the clip block. I have to first delete the transition.

- Often when I drag a clip onto the sequence timeline, on a different track, it cuts the clip below in half and budges all the track clips in front of it along to the right, messing up my sequence. REALLY ANNOYING!! Then I do the same again and it's fine.

- Similarly when I adjust a clip's speed, it increases or reduces in size and the clips in front of it move

There must surely be an option to turn off this idiotic behaviour but I am yet to find it!

ARGHHH!!

1- Use the roll edit tool- quick key is 'r' or 'rr'

2- There's a little arrow that changes from pointing down to pointing forward depending on where your mouse is on the track when you drop it. Arrow forward = insert Arrow down = drop in place

3- no real way around that unless you have it on a separate track and lock the others. Sometimes I'll drag it out beyond everything else, adjust speed, the drag it back.

4- It's all pilot error... you'll get it.

Cheers Tim.

Damn, that thing over the speed is a major annoyance. That's what I've been doing too - dragging it in front of all the other clips on the timeline. Maybe I'll give Premiere CS4 a go next time.

I think they addressed the speed issue in FCP 7 with the "ripple sequence" checkbox...I just forget which does which.

If you don't have FCP 7 (which gives you the choice of whether you want to ripple edit your timeline with the speed change), load the clip you want to edit in the viewer window, apply your speed change to the clip in the viewer, then perform your edit into the timeline.
