View Full Version : Horrible artifacts/glitches in shots!

I think I'm going to cry. Is my camera busted?

I've been adding saturation to my shots in post to make them more colorful, and in doing so I've noticed horrible horizontal glitches through out the shots. These happen every few frames. When the video plays you can't see them as bad as they look in the still shots, but there's definitely noticable artifacts.

Does this have something to do with my camera? Why is this happening?

When I add the de-interlace flicker it removes them, but I shouldn't have to do this! Is my P2 card busted? Is it because I pointed the camera up towards the sun for a few lead ins from a lens flare shot to a building?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Do these happen when you're playing back the footage from in-camera, or only once you've brought it into your NLE?

I didn't notice them until my NLE weeks later, so I don't have them on my P2 card right now to check, but I just noticed something: if I edit on my powerbook G4, I Don't see this artifacts. It's only on my G5 w/ display that I see them.

Furthermore, these were shot 108024, and recently I've been shooting 720p for another project theres been no problems at all.

If you don't see the issues on your G4, then you know the footage is good. If you don't see it on playback from the cards, then the footage is good.

thank god. any idea why this happened?

Looks like improper interpolation/interpretation of the frame rate -- perhaps pulldown removal was off?

if memory serves me right, it was turned off, because that was the solution for importing clips that had the RED ! next to them

Well, I meant "off" as in it was off-cadence, not turned off. :) What are you viewing these clips in on your different machines?

oh :P

same FCP studio 2 on each system

Are you viewing .mov files you created by logging/transferring files on just one machine, or did you log/transfer on both?

davidnssbm

im viewing the log/transfer .movs on ONE external harddrive that I plug into both systems depending on what location I edit at, so it's the same source for the .mov, but different computers.

How are you viewing them in FCS? Differently between machines?

nope, just scrubbing on the timeline, in the bins, etc.

so I don't have them on my P2 card right now to check

another very good example of why you should move your P2footage to a drive BEFORE doing the log and transfer in FCP. that way you would technically still have your native P2 state.

Is there a difference between timeline settings, particularly the timebase?

davidnssbm
09-08-2009, 01:27 PM
no because im opening the same project file on each computer.

Wgzn, do you mean I should use P2CMS -FIRST- so i have the contents folder and THEN import those folders to the log and transfer to get the .mov?

what did you shoot? 720pn, 1080i, etc?

1080 24p which i guess is interlaced

potipherswife

It is for sure interlaced. I've ran into this before. While importing the raw p2 files into FCP you have to remove the pulldown or you will have interlaced frames.

When I've fixed this before I just re-imported the files into FCP using the pulldown removal and made sure I edited on a timeline with a frame rate of 23.98. To do this you need access to the original p2 files.

Applying a de-interlace filter will only blend the two interlaced frames together making that ghosting effect you'll see in your screen grabs.

Is it 24p standard or 24pA?

24p
