A short project I shot that was originally intended for the internet is now going to be digitally projected from an Apple Pro-Res file in the theatre in downtown LA this weekend. The footage was shot on the HPX-170 @ 720p/n.

I have a few questions (in an effort to make the footage as good as it can be).

1. What is the best software up-scaler that I can use to get the 720p footage to 1920X1080p footage? I also have a Kona 3 card... but I'm not sure what I could do with that (since I'm not delivering on tape). ? I have heard that innobits makes a good scaler.

2. What is the best NOISE reducing software that won't smear and look like shit on the big screen?

3. The digital tech at the theatre said I could deliver an Apple Pro-Res HQ file... would the new 4:4:4:4 pro res file give me any advantage? I doubt it ... since the original footage is 8-bit, 4:2:2 720P..... but just thought I'd ask.

thanks in advance !

Michael

Movies that were shot with the old, tape Varicam at 720p/24 transfered to 35mm (which would be equivilent to 4k in digitial) looked fine. An HPX170 footage would look fine via digitial projection.

Yeah I've shot on the Varicam and seen it projected out to film. I think it did look alright, but it's not the same as 1920X1080 (for instance the new Varicam 2700 transferred and projected on film).

I know that HPX-170 will never be all much more beyond what it already is (which isn't bad)... I was just looking for a good quality software upscaler and I think I've found at least one by Innobits. It's called Purifier.

I havn't used this yet:
http://users.soe.ucsc.edu/~milanfar/software/superresolution.html (http://users.soe.ucsc.edu/%7Emilanfar/software/superresolution.html)

And it requires you already have MATLAB on your computer...but I'm in the process of playing around with it to see what it can do.

There's a more commercial version that uses the same sort of Super Resolution technology here:

In some of the comparisons I've seen it seems that this Super Resolution tech can slightly beat out the next runner up, which most people use which is Instant HD:

Hello, man this seems to be a awesome site!!!!!Just had question has anybody had a problem with getting a video made from Imovie into a mpeg4 to not loose its timing when uploading into like say a site like viddler or youtube. I just did a awesome video but when I try to get best qaulity which in this case is mpeg4 the quicktime video is great but when I want to make like a code by uploading to like viddler for example there seems to be a slight drag which throws the vocals off a tad bit, so it looks as if my lips are not on time with my track. Any help, thanks.
