View Full Version : Reverting back from OS 10.6 to 10.5

So I happily installed Snow Leopard, but forgot about my Duel adapter and any problems the new install could cause with driver compatibility. Of course there is no Duel driver for 10.6 so it looks like I will have to revert back to 10.5.

Has anyone else had to do this? Are there any problems with backtracking the operating system? Apple said it should be OK but were a little vague... I would love to hear if anyone has already had to do this. Thanks!

No idea if its possible. Past experiences taught me to wait until 3-4 months after the release of a ne OS...I will wait until I see a good reason to go 10.6!

You would need to clone your boot drive, and then reinstall 10.5.x.

Then reinstall all your apps and important files

You can't just revert

So I can't just use the original 10.5 disk and reinstall?

yeah, you can. IF you want to just reformat your drive. which is what id do anyway.

If you've been running Time Machine, can't you just do a restore from before your upgrade?

Cheers,

that will restore the system, but it is a bag full of hurt for the pro apps.

What's the hurt with the Pro Apps, David?
Lost preferences and settings perhaps?

I haven't been running Time Machine.

So best to erase and install?... i.e just start form scratch. I was kind of hoping I could just install the old OS over the top and keep all my files and software as they are.

Everything is backed up, so I guess I can just try and see what happens, but I was wondering if maybe files might be affected?....— like when you can't open a file from version 8 of a program with version 7... that kind of thing. Thats why I was wondering if anybody has tried, just to see if it poses any weird little issues.

This may be a stupid question but here goes....Did you actually try the adapter yet? There was no driver necessary for 10.5, I would doubt there is one necessary for 10.6. Remember you need to restart your mac or insert the duel adapter before starting it.

If the duel isn't working, you can still use the firewire connection on the camera (yes I know it's stupid but since my Duel adapter died, and it was the third one).

If you still want to downgrade, take an empty drive, create a Time Machine backup, boot from the Leopard (10.5) disc, erase your internal drive (Macintosh HD) and reinstall on it, then say use a time machine backup to restore your properties.

Not all the components and packages (under the hood) are restored.

Thanks for your help everyone. Yes, it looks like an erase and install is necessary.

Anyone know how long it took Duel to write the driver last time? I'm guessing we won't be getting anything soon?...

FCS3 the new version works fine with Leopard anyway

Hey...nobody answered my stupid question:

so i tried it myself since I am in the same situation as Chancer. Yup, it doesn't work. Now I am trying it under Parallels running Vista. But I need to update the damn service pack to install the driver patch. Then i think i need to install a Panny driver too (right?). I will let everyone know how it goes. Wish me luck.

Personally If I were to do the "BIG" SL update I'd fit a fresh OS HDD and do a complete re-install and keep the older known working version OS HDD if it all goes pear shaped, (as it appears in your case).
Maybe even dual boot OS's for testing out the new stuff, allways best to not be on the cutting edge, as you'll get cut up badly... experience tells us that..

Well, Vista suc$!. I can't stand windows, sorry if I am offending anyone, but man, when will Microsoft get it right? So as you might have guessed I cannot get the duel adapter to mount. I can't even upgrade Vista to SP1...or at least I have done it but the duel adapter "patch" needed says its not installed. So no go. But what the hell, I can offload from the camera, or if need be boot from a usb/firewire powered drive running Leopard. Quite frankly for my work-flow the Duel was a luxury, not a necessity. Sorry to you windows users for the rant...but I do a lot of web design too, so I am at the mercy of the IE developers, who STILL can't get it right...it is really unbelievable how bad IE is.

Whenever you install a new OS I create a partition and install it on the new partition keeping the older version on the other partition. That way if something goes wrong you can always go back to you original install.

What do you do if that HDD goes down?

I have 5 HDD's. One has win xp and 10.4.11, another with 10.5 and 10.6.
