Set to Motion JPEG, the frame rate is 30fps, and lower resolutions including 848x480, 640x480 and 320x240 pixels are also available. Set to AVCHD, the resolution is fixed at 1280x720 and the frame rate recorded at progressive 50fps for PAL models or 60fps for NTSC models (the native sensor output in each case is 25 or 30fps respectively).

What does that mean? The sensor outputs 30fps but records 60fps in AVCHD mode. How does that work? Would have been nice if they included 24p.

It means that you'll get 720/30p.

Barry do you know if the 20mm f/1.7 lens is supposed to do silent AF?

Ben,

That's pretty much unknown right now, but this lens was announced months ago, virtually when the G1 was released, well before the GH1, so I really doubt it.

Well, I may be wrong about the lens having quiet AF. Here's a quote from Panasonic:

" The inclusion of a stepping motor makes the focusing action smooth and silent for use in both photo and movie recording."

This is from this page: http://www.bjp-online.com/public/showPage.html?page=868273

On the downside, the clip-on EVF is lacking:

"The accessory viewfinder displays most of the camera’s mode functions, and has a resolution of 202,000 dots, which is less than half that of the rear screen, and very much less than the G1’s 1,440,000-dot built-in viewfinder."

From: http://www.bjp-online.com/public/showPage.html?page=868272

Having both a G1 and the GH1, I'd be really hard pressed to downgrade so much on the EVF. Hard to figure why they wouldn't use the same LCD for both?!?

Hmm, but it doesn't have the HD designation like the 14-140 has. Maybe it's just the AF motor then.

It wasn't announced way back with the G1 it just made some appearances on mock-ups...now it's hear waaaaay later so who knows. Maybe I'll call Panasonic and see if I can find out. Now that there is a press release, etc, and specs, you'd think they'd tell us. Maybe the fact that they're not indicates it's not silent.

It does not AF *at all* during video, at least on the GF1 so I'm guessing it's a lens limitation meaning no AF even with GH1.

Can't believe the size of this little baby and its interchangeable.
If I ever get one I'll use and adapter and put my new Tokina 11-16/2.8 on it
just for kicks.

Cam will look like a lens cap on 'roids
