For those of you still looking:

Au $2222,22
By far the cheapest I've seen for something that's shipping from within Australia & with an Australian warranty.
I'm glad the price is finally coming down from the inflated AU $3000.

Isn't the warranty international?

That price is very good considering its a major franchise. Would I be able to use that to see if i can get a price match?
$2359 is the cheapest i've seen on digital camera warehouse. It's amasing how much it has dropped in the short period of just over a month here from $3000. I've still got hope it will hit a sweet 2k to roughly reflect world market value.
Australia is quite pedantic about covering Australian purchased products so I have been told by a friend in the camera industry. He said canon australia in particular don't like/put low priortity on servicing canon cameras that are purchased outside of australia.
Have you seen prices drop in singapore YSLEE?

I doubt a bricks and mortar store would price match that as it is a "web only" special. Another online store, though... possibly, but not heaps likely.
I find this price drop a bit of a kick in the face from Panasonic, especially after I willingly forked over $3000 for exactly the same thing last month. A price drop this soon and of this amount is a bit unusual... this really should have been the starting price.

I doubt there has been that great a drop, since Singapore hasn't been selling at stupid prices to begin with. Possibly a small drop. I haven't been checking though!

I doubt it, because it's an online only deal.
What I tried in shops is saying that a friend could mail me one over from Singapore and it would be $1800 all up, but I'd prefer to buy it in Australia with an Australian warranty. So what's the best price they could do?
They only went to $2350ish.
But give it a shot hey, you might have better luck.
Woot! Other Aussies! Anyone else from Melbourne?

Melbourne here.

Absolutely agree. I'd pay the extra 200 ontop of importing one from singapore to get a domestic one at 2k in a heart beat. Kinda says alot really in terms of their greedy marketing and markups. Some have argued that the initial high price was because of taxes and yada yada added here in Australia but this shows the opposite. It also shows their gross markup on such an item.
I'm gonna hit my aquaintance up again to have a play with a demo model with my newly arrived zeiss and adapter and drop the "best price" again...lol Hopefully I'll get a better deal second time round, but I'm not holding my breath.
A camera house in syd said the red model should be due sometime this month. Will that mean excess stock and futher price drop....lets hope so. The black one is slowly growing on me, then again it could just be desperation just so I can have one in my hands sometime soon.

Does the australian models have the same 29:59 recording length restriction as the EU tax gimped ones?

I'm in Melbourne, I sent Panasonic Aus a rather straight to the point email about them being a greedy bunch of criminals selling this for $3k...
(Actually I think it was first released at approx $3300?)
Having been burnt by Pana Aus before, paying through the nose for MiniDV cams on first release I resigned myself to not get sucked in again.
If the GH1 ever drops below $2k (it should be around $1800) I will consider getting one but to be honest when I read of the problems and work-arounds and I look at the inflated Aus price I really think I am over it, it's just not worth that sort of money (to me)
