Pre-ordered mine from Best Buy this morning. Pre-order availability time is Oct. 11th, with ETA of 10/13 to 10/19.

Phew, looks like I reacted too quickly. I called and a friendly rep at Adorama confirmed what I thought, when I decided to think rationally - the email is a generic email sent out by the system, when they don't have the item in stock. She says that they so far have 161 pre-orders and I fall within that amount. She didn't however say if they had more or not.

Est. delivery date Oct. 9th, but it might be a couple days earlier or it might be a couple days later.

In addition to that September 19th delivery date for them, the CSR I spoke with (Joe was his name) said they were receiving 400 units and only have a back order list of 80. The people on the backorder list are those who have placed an order AND called in to the credit card processing side to verify. He said if your order page says "Backordered" you're good to go and will reveive in the first shippment.

The question now is what to do to record audio, and how to use my nikon lenses on this new sucker. I will also need to buy an external monitor for focusing and exposure, and maybe something with a histogram. Going to miss having zebras, but going to love going tapeless.

Hopefully we will be able to turn off AGC. If so, the juicedlink adapter would be a GREAT option. If not, Zoom H4N is probably the cheapest good option for field recording.

But since circuit city has a different status for their items than TD...i can only assume that I am on their backorder and hopefully grab one of the 1st shipments . I still have my amazon preorder of Sept 31 to fall back on if my order will truly ship on 01/10 from CC...

*Update (have to do credit card verification -_-..) I can also confirm that they(TD,CC,CUSA) have 5x the amount of 7d's compared to the preorders. They gave me a new date for shipment which is Sept 15.

I've been using Nikon lenses no problem on my Canon 30D (the great grandfather to the 7D).

I bought 2 adapters from eBay user "buyitjnow" and will soon be buying more. They ship from China, so it takes some time. I had to put a piece of gaff tape between the lens and the adapter to prevent slipping, and I recommend getting each lens its own adapter.

Pre-ordered from Calumet in Berlin. The rep told me that they haven't had too many pre-orders yet so I'll be in the first batch. Even though the camera is supposed to ship in the beginning of October, he said that realistically it will be available in mid-October. This is going to be a long and painful wait... :D

Clearly an automated message from Adorama. Considering the camera isn't due out on shelves till the end of September, I would guesstimate people will not physically have the 7D until the 1st to 2nd week of October. Who knows, they may surprise us and some companies may get a few in early to fullfill the orders. Obviously we will know the minute someone gets one toward the end of the month / early October.

Take this for what it's worth. Pre-ordered from TigerDirect. Got a call today, apparently AmEx put a "fraud alert" on my account, so I had to go in and clear that off and tell them that yes, the charge is allowable (but... why are they charging now?)

Then, I get another call from someone wanting to verify the order, and trying to up-sell me on an extended warranty (no thanks). He said "okay, just wanted to offer it since it's such a great deal... but we'll go ahead and get this shipped out to you."

I profoundly doubt that it's actually ready to be shipped, I'm sure I'm in for at least another four week wait, and I'm sure this is just the normal process that TigerDirect goes through. But I thought I'd lay it out there for my fellow TD pre-order homies...

I don't think anyone can really answer this definitively without knowing allotment numbers (and particularly those out of the first batch).

Two scenarios:
1) If your local Penn already has a designated # of 7Ds coming to them, (say 5) and you're one of the first 5 on their list, then you'll get the camera around when everyone else does.

But the fact that they're asking you to PIF makes me think that

2) they'll be placing a 7D order through Canon, and it's up to Canon to fulfill it. I would think that in this scenario a larger company like B&H would have priority in the first batch (and maybe even subsequent ones), so you could be waiting a while for your camera.

It looks like the B&H pre-orders are probably all spoken for, so it's pretty much a crapshoot, but I'd stick with them on the basis of not having to pay up front (having $1600 tied up for an indefinite period with no camera would not sit well with me, that's a lot of interest!)

Someone with more insight feel free to correct this post, this is how it works with other expensive electronics that I'm familiar with, but it could be different for cameras.

Just got off the phone with a very nice and informative Rep from AVAlive. They have on their website, and have confirmed via the phone conversation I had with them just moments ago, that the release date for the 7D is September 21st. I asked if she had any information regarding the actual shipping date and she said that is is usually just 2-3 days after that time.

Obviously pre-orders are fulfilled on a first come, first serve basis so actual shipping dates will vary, but it may just be that some people will have the camera in hand before the end of the month.

Take this with a grain of salt as usual. We all know how phone Reps can be, but I have dealt with them before with the Panasonic AG-HMC150 and they were pretty accurate with everything.

Wow I guess the 21st is the end of the month. Usually you expect them to ship it around the 30th or so. I would love to get this before the 30th in my hands. I'm curious what made you decide to go with the 7D instead of keeping the GH1 that you already had.

I had the GH1 for about a week, so I shot some tests. And before someone asks, no I wasn't whipping the camera around to test for mud. However, even when the camera was locked down, the codec / compression was just ugly. I've downloaded the numerous 7D clips that are straight out of the camera and they are so much cleaner! Plus native 24P, no pulldown issues to deal with. Not to mention I have a few Canon lenses already.

All right. Yeah, I was just curious. In the end, I couldn't decide between the GH1 and the 7D myself, so I just ordered them both! I think that I'll use the 7D primarily, with the GH1 as a back-up and for things (like AF) that the 7D can't do. I like to think that they're perfect complements for each other...

My phone rep couldn't find it until I gave him the item number. Then he said they had 100 pre-orders already in, and couldn't put me on that list. He also said the delivery truck would arrive this afternoon, (today is Tuesday Sep 8) and that he thinks the cameras will be shipping out Thursday.

HE ALSO said he showed 400 units arriving on this truck. So, even though he couldn't put me on the list to ship Thursday, he said I could just go on their site Thursday and order it, and it would be the same speed, because all Thursday boxes will ship that afternoon.

He's probably just doing a good job of keeping people watching TD stock so that they move their cameras earlier than the rest. I do find it hard to believe that TD would get cameras before Amazon, but the possibility of course is not far fetched.

For those in the UK, creative video says they have stock on 25th September...for £1599 at that. Although it appears they don't include a CF card and extra battery like many of the other UK distributors.

When it comes to GH1 preorder. Panasonic just told all of these retailers they would give them cameras, only gave a couple and sold straight from their site for the first month.

Amazon got a couple. I know that because I believe the number was 5 and I was 6 on the preorder list. Second shipment came a month later - I got one then.

In general I think the best bets are Amazon and B&H. Amazon always ships faster than B&H in my experience though.

Also - got in contact with Canon yesterday, and even if these things are scarce like the GH1, I'm happy to say that I have been guaranteed one by the first of October (at least a loner until mine comes in). My company is shooting a low budget but very high profile feature that will be all 7d and 5d Mark II. That is assuming that the announcement on the 29th doesn't change the world.

My Canon contact also said the camera is going to be incredibly hard to find, which, of course, is something we already know. He also stated that he personally doesn't think the sensor on the 7d comes anywhere near the capability of the 5d. Time will tell.

Canon has said to each of the ones I asked the same thing ... 'September' with no fixed date.

One encouraging thing I heard during my phone around research is that Canon and Nikon are generally better than others
at their distribution. Namely Pana.

I believe it's automated. The receipt by retailer date people have been given from Adorama has consistently been Oct 9th, so there is no reason they would be apologizing now.

If only Panasonic could actually get their products out there, I would have probably bought a GH1 by now.

The only reason I put a 7D on preorder is because the GH1 is MIA everywhere I've looked.
Figured I may as well get on the list if Pansonic can't get anymore out there in time.

Personally, I think TD is full of crap on this one. Every other company seems to be saying October so what makes them so different? That's actually a good idea -- it may very well have been October 9th all along.

I think TDs system auto generates delivery dates for shipments from suppliers and that is all that the CSRs can go by.

Thing is, at this point if I have to wait two weeks I feel like I may as well wait and see what the 7D can do -
though, as nice as that cameras sounds, I'm pretty convinced the GH1 suits my needs a bit better.
Just can't help but feel like it's cutting so close to the release that I should probably hold off if I can to see the 7D in action.

I'll check out Panasonic Direct and keep it in mind.

I thought it was already stated that the release date of the Canon 7D would be the end of September? Anything sooner is just speculation. I think if we get the cameras by mid October then canon did a great job. They probably have about 1000 people who have the money and are willing to buy this camera so if they can fill all of those orders by October 15th then they are Amazing! I think they will probably sell upwards of 5,000 by the end of the year. They came to the market at a great time. That is a quick 8 million or so.

Does any one know where to get sales figures for this type of thing?

This is one of those times my DVXuser obsession saved my ass. I'm pretty sure if I had actually gone to sleep, I wouldn't be on any pre-order lists and I'd be FUMING mad.

And in lieu of it all, I'm gonna go ahead and keep my PreoRder in Japan as well so I can see about picking up another pair of 'em.

"...both will be shipped by nov,16..."

I guess this is the "standard response", two months as the limit to ship preorders.

According to my local retailer, during an initial release, body only models are usually shipped to them faster than kit packages.

Apparently this is what happened with the 5D when it was initially released.

Keep in mind that this could vary by region so it may not be the case in your neck of the woods.

I just pre-ordered from Best Buy today, interestingly their estimate of "10/13-10/19" becomes far more specific when selecting faster shipping methods. They list 10/15 for Next-Day and 10/16 for Expedited, with free shipping arriving 10/19.

It seems safe to say that this shipment will go out on the 14th, with earlier pre-orders potentially shipping sooner. Not the soonest date, but certainly more concrete than Amazon's "within 2 month's of today's date" estimate.

Hopefully Pro Photo Supply here in Portland will get them in a week or two earlier.
