View Full Version : How do you display ISO info while shooting in movie mode?

Hi all,
I have read the instructions but don't remember seeing this anywhere.. when the camera is set to AUTO ISO, it changes the ISO automatically. However, instead of displaying 100 ISO or 400 ISO, it just shoes "AUTO" in the display. Does anyone know if it is possible to display the actual current ISO number in the display whilst shooting in AUTO ISO in movie mode?

I don't think so...
I'm not sure why you'd want to be using Auto ISO for a movie? I have a feeling it's going to cause you some problems.

you can only lock exposure in the pasm settings, if you dont lock it I have afeeling everything is auto in pasm. In CMM you can lock everything incl. iso?

In CMM, you can't select Auto ISO. I wish it were an option though as the G1/GH1 does Auto ISO pretty well (for stills at least). Sometimes it sure would be easier than having to manually cycle up through the ISOs to get a usable enough exposure to get the shot.

This would be a good firmware request. I'll send it in.
In movie mode, when shooting for 24p, it seems that in most situations setting the shutter speed to 1/50th is not unreasonable.
I would like to be able to do this in manual mode (the 1/50th) and have auto iso, but the auto iso is not available in manual.
My compromise has been to use S mode at 1/50th, auto iso and then vary the EC as needed.
But I agree that I'd much rather know what the iso is in the situation, or at least be able to set an upper limit on it.

Sort of a waste of time for this in a firmware update...I honestly do not see the utility. ISO has the capabilities of being totally destructive to an image of set wrong, and giving the camera automatic control of it during video, when you could blow an entire shot, makes no sense to me. Stills maybe, since if you don't like it you can just take another one (usually...but in many situations not)..but video..no way. Why would anyone entrust the camera with making automatic changes to a function that, if changed improperly (IE by a computer with no aesthetic sense based on some arbitrary idea of what "enough light" is, rather than by the human operator) could potentially be catastrophically devastating to your work? I know I wouldn't.
Maybe allowing manual change of ISO while recording? That would be nice.

Ben - I see what you mean.
Maybe it is as I come from a photography background - here's what I would like - and maybe there is a better way to do this. If so please chime in.
Manual mode, I'll set the shutter speed and aperture. Auto iso, but I can put limits on this (for example stay between 100 and 400) to keep the exposure balanced. If this cannot give me the exposure I'd like then I'll override it with either ss, aperture or iso.
Something like this is pretty standard on nicer DSLR's, and as long as you keep the iso's in a reasonably low range it, to me, seems a very handy way to shoot in situations with lighting that changes quickly.

I do notice one thing, when in playback mode, is there anyway to find out at what ISO we set when the video was taken?

In Creative Motion Picture mode ISO can be auto in shutter or aperture priority sub-modes, but not in the manual sub mode. I've suggested before that to accommodate a changing light situation while retaining control over aperture and shutter, having auto ISO would sometimes be useful in CMPM manual, and for those not wanting it, well, don't use it. I've also said that it would be good if there were more info displayed on the settings in use where the GH1 has made them itself. I'd certainly endorse any suggestion to have this stuff in a firmware update, especially as I can't see anyone having a problem with such additional options for those wanting them.

More options are always good. Coming from a higher-spec camera, it's always been my moan that the GH1 could do more in customisation.
