View Full Version : Passing S-video through to HVX200's 1394

I'm trying to figure if it is possible to essentially use the HVX200 as an analog-to-digital converter.

What I want to do is take S-video out of a switcher and analog audio out of a mixer, bring them into the HVX and record them either on an FS-100 or capture it directly in Premiere.

I've read the manual and haven't been successful. So: Is this possible? How?

Thank you in advance for your advice.

You can do it with the DVX, I don't remember if the HVX lets you do it or not.

If so, you would have to be in tape mode. Put the switch in tape mode and then go into VCR mode and turn the thumbnails off, and see if it works...

Thanks, Barry. I found an older response (I assume from the same Barry Green) on a CreativeCows forum (http://forums.creativecow.net/thread/193/863492#863492) asking a similar question, I think. Any insights?

I can get the s-video signal in VCR mode, but can't seem to get it into my FS-100. Any one else dealt with this?

SOLVED!

After some messing around, I seem to have gotten it to work.

My set up:
HVX200a is in tape media
Analog audio and S-video into the HVX200a
1394 runs into a laptop running Premiere, which sees it as a source
THEN I switched the HVX from camera mode to VCR mode (I don't think I'm being superstitious; the order seemed to make a difference)

So seemingly simple, yet so oddly difficult.

Check out the range of canopus (now Grass Valley) ADVC digital converters. They work great for what you're doing, are inexpensive, provide a component D1 output for monitor, and best of all...no wear and tear on your HVX.
