View Full Version : Working With 5d and GH1

I've been shooting with both a 5d and GH1 on a couple projects and am trying to figure out the best settings to shoot in so that the workflow is as easy and as seamless as possible. I feel like both cameras have their strengths and because of this I'd like to swap between the two depending on what different shots require.

My two thoughts were to run the lengthy 24p conversion on the 5d footage (using CineTools and Compressor) and shoot the GH1 in 1080 24p, but the processing time is pretty substantial and not the easiest to do on location.

The other thought was to shoot the GH1 in 720 60p and convert that footage to 30p and then work in a 720p timeline, downsizing the 5d from 1080 to 720 (have people been uprezing the 60p GH1 footage to 1080?)... but then I worry that I am sacrificing quality and this too is a bit time intensive.

Other options?

I apologize if this has been asked before, searched and came up with nothing. Any insight into workflows or other ideas would be really great. Thanks!! tk

Hard to say anything before knowing your target.

If so, what system:

Digital projector
If so, from what media:

Computer playback

Film-out for cinema

Nice break-down, but I'm sure it's been a while since anyone has projected from BetaMax...

(Although it'll look better than VHS!)

OK, U-matic then.

Final usage would be in this order I'd guess:

1) Web Video hosted on clients website (probably 720p)
2) Instore playback on TV's/LCDs
3) Limited distribution DVD (Run of 2-10k)
4) Vimeo for my own personal promotion

My thought is edit pieces in highest quality possible and then compress down based on usages needed. Thanks for any ideas. tk

Again you haven't told us if you are on NTSC or PAL but you talk about 60p so that makes me assume you are in the US.

How 'bout this then: Shoot 720p on GH1 and upscale it to 1080 when transcoding to whatever codec your NLE is happy with. Scaling at this stage shouldn't add that much timewise. Transcode the 5DmkII material to the same codec. Edit away. Bear in mind that GH1 does true NTSC frame rate, ie: 59.94 / 29.97 fps while 5DmkII does exactly 30.0000000000000 fps so you will drift out of sync on long takes.

Output to either 1080 or 720p depending on target.

Yes its NTSC

So you think shooting 720p and upresing to 1080 30p (or 29.97?) would give the best result? I'd probably be using Neo HD unless people had a better reccomnedation. Thanks. tk
