View Full Version : How to get 24p on GH-1?

I bought a GH-1 recently, I'm in the UK. Whilst I knew it would have 25p, I'm starting to realise I really miss the 24p option I'm seeing in a lot of other people's footage. It gives a different "look" to 25p. Converting to 24p in Vegas just isn't as good. Is there any way for me to get my GH-1 to do 24p in camera? e.g. firmware update / convert to US model?
I'm disappointed I got the 25p model now, when we pay more here for it than US users, so hoping there is a solution out there...
Thanks,
Matt

It looks the same.
You're talking about footage that's 4% smoother (25p)....that means it's 96% the same. Come on. Enjoy your easy pulldown and 720p50--->720p25 workflow.

Ah, so 4% smoother (96% the same), isn't quite the same :) It's subtle but it's there.
Actually, I notice a difference in terms of filmic look. Sure I'd like both modes, but if given the choice, I would like 24p. It's the same hardware as the US version so presumably it's possible to just change the firmware or something? Perhaps update it to the US firmware instead of europe firmware?

I concur. Nobody I know including myself who has been blindtested to spot the difference between 24 and 25 fps on unknown footage have managed to be correct better than chance. Well one guy long ago and he's a musician/sound engineer with pitch perfect hearing so he made it on the sound not the image. As nowadays one can stretch/pitch sound with 4% and no quality difference even that doesn't matter anymore.
However do make sure to have the shutter at 1/50 at all times or you'll get a strobed motion which looks unfilmic on either 24 or 25.

Shoot 25p or 50p 1/50. You'll be fine.
No you don't notice a difference you're imagining it. It's one extra frame per second for a total of 25...it's adding 1/25th of what you're seeing. At a 1/50 shutter you really shouldn't be able to perceive it. Seriously. I don't usually speak in absolute terms like this but if you're shooting everything correctly and you can really see a huge difference then I say BURN HIM HE'S A WITCH!

I'm a little confused about 24p. The box on the camera shows 24p but when you actually record in 1080 it's 1080 60i correct? In order to get 24p you need to do extra step buy removing pull down? So why is Panasonic claiming 24p out of the box?

Because 24p in a 60i stream is basically 24p...it's still recording that...you're not converting framerate when you remove pulldown.
It's probably called something like 1080i/24p which is what the non 24PA is on the HVX, etc.

That one frame may not see much it but it is one frame every second, which amounts to a perceivable difference for me although you have to see the 24p and 25p footage side by side to notice!!
Does the PAL GH1 strobe and flicker with certain 'evil' lights at 1/30 shutter speed, in 25 mode? On my NTSC model, it can flicker at 1/30 under street lights, in 24p mode. However changing the shutter speed to 1/50 solves the issue complete. So since the flickering is do dependant on the shutter speed alone and not the recording frame rate, I am wondering if the PAL model STILL has this issue with street lights at 1/30 in 25p mode?

Cheers,
What do you mean by this? My GH-1 doesn't have an option to change shutter speed to anything other than 1/50 during motion record; I've read the manual too, but from what I can tell it records all footage at 50p (720) or 50i (1080).... just all within a 25p wrapper. So this means when you play it back in your NLE you can slow it down if you wish. What I'm trying to say is, I don't know how you can not record at 1/50? What option are you referring to? Sorry if I'm using the wrong terminology!

You need to be in Creative Movie mode and I think there might be a menu option to allow shutter control but if there is I set it once when I first got it.
No. Only 1080 is 25p in a 50i wrapper. The 720p is 50p. It is much smoother. You can convert it to 25p in post, which DOES NOT slow it down...only conforming it to 25p slows it down.

Other way around in 1080 mode, it shoots 25 fps and sticks it in a 50i wrapper.

You are confounding frame rate with shutter speed. The shutter speed in 720p can be set from 1/2 to 1/4000 second and in 1080p from 1/30 to 1/4000.

Yes I know, just not used to talking about it so don't know the terminology :)

Wasn't trying to yell or anything just providing emphasis lol.
