Maybe its about a monster on a diet.

How could we not enter the first DVX MONSTER fest?

Guys, this will be our last DVXUSER fest, so we're gonna be going balls out. Those of you who have been here awhile know our tradition for creating "monster" threads and we plan to make this one the 'mothah of all monster threads.'

So, we meet again, Dr Jones...

Indeed we do, Shawneous. I assume you've been CLEANING UP while we've been absent, eh? PICKING UP a lot of filmmaking gems, perhaps? We ordinarily don't indulge in TRASH talk, but in your case we will bring our "A" game.....

Glad you guys are back. Monster Fest wouldn't be the same without you.
I would wish you guys good luck but you aren't going to need any. :)

I'll do my best to add to the thread volume so you can once again create the biggest Fest thread ever and rule from beyond the grave!!

As many of you know, Fat Monster absolutely depends upon slav-- I mean volunteer labor to fill out our crews. We are assessing the nature of this shoot and we will be looking to DVXUSER to provide the skilled professional hard partying insomniacs necessary. And in addition to fine beverages and a space on the floor of the monster shack, you will get a commemorative T-shirt! Egads! Who could resist such an opportunity?

Ok, friends ...

Let's get started with the comics and trashy pictures already.

We'll begin with a thinly disguised morality tale in the form of a comic taken from the events of last weekend at the Louisville Fright Night Film Festival!!!!

Believe it or not, we will occasionally discuss aspects of filmmaking here on this thread.

I figure I should give a FM update since we're in the process of revising our website and haven't updated the blog in ages. ...

1) This past weekend while we attended the film festival in Louisville (where the infamous events being described in the comic strip above occurred) we met several very interesting people including Michael Madsen's assistant, who has a small project coming up this fall with Ben Kingsley that we've been asked to assist on. Of course, you never can be sure what projects are going to truly come together in Hollywood, but his ImDB record is crediible and he has shot a feature he wrote and directed with Madsen and Dennis Hopper in the lead roles. Obviously, we'd love to work with Sir Ben and hopefully I'll know more soon.

2) We're booked to shoot a scene with Lexi Alexander this fall for her feature "Lifted" involving a returning gulf war vet. While primary cinematography will mainly be shot in Mississippi, she screened some of our firefight footage from our "With Angels and Fire" project and decided we would be up to the task of shooting her flashback battle scenes out here in Cali. Lexi was nominated for an Academy Award for her film "Johnny Flynton" and she directed "Green Street Hooligans" as well as "Punisher: War Zone." We're delighted to have the chance to work with such a talented director.

3) We are still slated to shoot the feature "Cross" for Morningstar Films this fall. Preproduction has been a bit turbulent with casting changes and script rewrites but things seem to be coming together. We were pleased to hear directly from Michael Madsen while we were in Louisville that he will be in the cast and this week we learned that Harvey Keitel has agreed to appear. Since we're serving as the shooting crew and aren't writing or directing, though, we keep our mouths shut and just do what we're told. It has been an interesting ride.

4) We've shot quite a bit of reality television stuff this past year and while it pays the bills, frankly, we're looking forward to being able to shoot our own picture here in Monster Fest. On Monday I'm pitching four project ideas to my partners, Luis and Tim. We'll reach a consensus on one and we'll begin writing the script accordingly. I will say that I saw DISTRICT 9 this week and it was a huge inspiration for me. I highly recommend it to everyone here.

5) We are particularly pleased and excited to have acquired an amazing script for a feature based on the novel "Wolf Whistle" by Lewis Nordan. This book has received numerous awards and has made many reviewers' "best of the decade" lists. The project was parked at Paramount where two budgets were drawn up and it was slated for production until Michelle Manning and the rest of the production administration were sacked. As is usual in such situations, the project was shelved in favor of the new production team's vision. The story is set in the deep south with the backdrop of the famous Emmitt Till civil rights murder driving the plot. It's an incredible work and you can get a taste of it here: http://www.mccormickbookinn.com/wolf_whistle1.htm We're honored and delighted to be given the opportunity to pitch and develop this film. Hopefully, we'll have news soon.

6) Luis and I got back from Guatemala where we shot interviews for a forensic documentary. Suffice it to say that it was one of the most amazing experiences of my life. Luis was born and raised there and has family who treated us like royalty. We are discussing shooting a film there next spring. Stay tuned.

..... Mark, Tim and Luis

meh video business seems to be a slow pace lately with summer and all, but oddly have been getting some cinematographer work with a local project that should hopefully bring in some more work soon. All of course based on an audition tape I shot for a friend... Still putting myself in the rig a few times a week though even if I'm not shooting. Such good exercise! Working in a few steadishots just for the hell of it on my Monsterfest shoot. Had to build a stupid weight to strap on the d90 so it'll fly...

I'm all down for working on Cross. Glad to hear its still in the pipeline and not lost funding or anything terrible.

Saw District 9 for the second time. If you have any affinity for sci-fi do go see this flick.
I am waiting for it to hit Hong Kong theaters! I'm dying to see it! Watched Inglourisous Basterds Yesterday though and watched the 15 minutes of AVATAR in an IMAX on Friday so the wait isn't that bad. :D

So how is pre production coming along guys? Any updates?

And we want to see more funny pictures :D

I couldn't get over how bold they were to show interaction with the aliens, intimate interaction with the aliens, within the first handful of minutes...

Nah. ... it's an interesting film, though, and it raises a lot of questions without being preachy. The setting of South Africa really adds a lot with that country's history of ethnic oppression from all sides. I recall when I saw the short film it was based on (Alive in Joburg) that I was stunned at how brilliant it was to depict the aliens in the context of refugees or outcasts.

Ok, I've got a motion-tracking file processing so I'm hanging out drinking scotch and watching DVDs. I'll relate an interesting little story for what it's worth:

When I was 6 years old my brother, who was two years older than me, got to go to his first monster movie. Now, it should be noted that this was in the tiny town of Ellinwood, Kansas in 1959. We had a movie theater that was pretty much of the Cinema Paradiso mold. My folks felt we were not mature enough to see "scary" movies until at least 8 or 9 so this was a big deal and I recall vividly how my brother returned from the Saturday Matinee with a couple other big kids to regale us small fry as to the wonders they had seen.

I was transfixed beyond measure. I made my brother tell the story over and over again. Interestingly, I never asked him the title of the damn film (or at least don't recall I did). My brother was a really crappy artist but I had him draw scenes of the film on scrap pieces of seismology paper from my dad's office (he was a geologist).

I was very impressionable and envied my brother so much that I committed his crude drawings and verbal descriptions to heart. The film involved an invading robot from outer space that telescoped up in a series of boxes until it was taller than a skyscraper. He drew crappy helicopters and planes flying around it and put those little stars and bars symbols all of us kids associated with the air force in the 50s and 60s.

Well, my brother is not a sci-fi aficionado so that by the time he was 10 he had forgotten (or at least didn't want to remember) anything about the movie in spite of my entreaties to discuss the film. So, I went through the next half-century of my life with the image of my first monster movie seen only through my imagination based on the description of my brother. Occasionally I would describe the plot to people to see if they knew what the film was, but I never got anywhere. I eventually figured my brother had made most of it up or I had elaborated or exaggerated the story beyond recognition.

So, imagine my surprise and delight about 3 years ago when I was at a lawyer-client's office in Pasadena who happened to mention that his father was an early special effects artist in the 50's. He described one film that his father was most proud of and I immediately recognized it as the film my brother saw. It's a classic 50's B-sci-fi flick called "KRONOS" and you can see the trailer on YouTube:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7ErOqYD-i3Q

I finally got around to ordering it on NetFlix and today I'm watching it. As best I can reconstruct, this is almost exactly 50 years from the date my brother saw it in Ellinwood, Kansas. It's amazing how much the film resembles the one I've had in my mind based on his re-telling of the story and his crude drawings.

It really is a classic of the genre and is a ton of fun to watch.

Susanne G.

Fine, good to hear- Blaine is back. I remember that his comments to other films in previous filmfests were often about sound. So it seems to me that your soundman is back :)

Is also Scooby back? And what kind of hat has Blaine got on his head? It seems a mix of a hat for to going under the shower for old ladies or a modern version of an old hat for a pilot. These ones who flew the old douple-decker-two-seats-aeroplanes.

Mark, sweetheart - I like your little nostalgic family story - very warm hearted. It is enjoyable to see this old Trailer and very amusing seeing a slogan like 'shock proof' - it let me smile!

Now - what is the plan for your film. Will it be an adaption of 'KRONOS'?

This will be the last competition entry for Fat Monster, although we do hope and expect to occasionally return with an exhibition piece or two. We all enjoyed shooting O2 so much and with the theme being "MonsterFest" we felt it would be a good opportunity to build a monster crew one more time.

Susanne, that phrase applies here as well and we're definitely feeling the burn. We've been shooting so much stuff for clients and other production houses in the past year so that it feels damn good to put together a "pure" monster project again.

You are always so positive and enthusiastic. I sincerely hope we can please you this time around.

Looks rad Mark!

Brandon, there's definitely some "rad" stuff going on with this story. We may be shooting part of this in your neck of the woods and, if so, hopefully you can stop by the set.

Dear Mark,

It isn't that important if you can me or all the others please this time around or if 'Dirty World' will have the success as '02'. For me it is more important that you are around here this time and can make this fest richer with your motivating and positive present. And then, if you are enthusiastic and it feels good to make a 'pure' monster project again is still better :)

Lots of location discussion by the team today. More tomorrow. We, like many of you guys, are wrestling with how to pull off a rather ambitious project under a tight deadline and with a tight budget. Ain't Indie Filmmaking fun???

Nice find, Jack! It's cool to know that set well enough to appreciate the contortions they had to go through to get a couple of those camera angles. Nice trailer.

The venue is pretty cool - the Chaplin Theater at Raleigh Studios on Melrose, the oldest continuously operational studio in the country.

Fookin'A ....!!!!! High Times in L.A. mah man!

Hey, Luis and I have found a very strange little Karaoke bar that you GOTTA come with us to. ... Also, did you see the other day on Yahoo they featured the 5 most difficult Karaoke songs and guess what was number one?????

You guessed it:

5 HARDEST SONGS
Hard karaoke songs are not just the hardest to sing, but are ones that make you look crappy if you suck at them.

#1: “Welcome To The Jungle,” Guns n Roses
In addition to the high pitched squeals, try pulling off the “sh-na-na-na-na-na-na” part.

I'll remind readers of this thread that you can actually see the amaing caterwauling of JDS singing "Welcome to the Jungle" by posting an image per the rules of our contest HERE (http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showpost.php?p=1725663&postcount=132). Seeing Jack Daniel Stanley do the "sha-na-na-na-na-na-na" part is something you simply must see.

Ha ha ha! I wouldn't put money on it, my man. Looks like some talented lunatics hard at work in their mad scientist laboratories this time. We're just glad to be part of a fest again.

Nice new website, Troy!

No, I've been off the radar for a little while now, but I'm trying to make a come back. Perhaps next time. I might be down there for college next year, in which case I'll hope to get my flippers dirty in the muddy filmmaking river.

The other day two separate people asked if we were going to have Matt Gettemeier on board for this swan song. The answer is a cautious "yes" if his schedule will permit him to fly out from St. Louis for the shoot in October. We consider Getteier to be a true monster "in exile" and, in all seriousness, he is one of the most talented individuals to ever post on this board. He also is unquestionably neurotic as evidenced by the following disturbing adventure from last year's DVXUSER extravaganza in L.A.:
