Alright, so I'm hanging out at dvxuser on a Friday night, listening to Pink Floyd heavily (Pulse, Live), getting into the cans, and picked a face to model tonight, not to complete it or anything, just for relaxing.
This one in particular...

I thought it looked interesting. I didn't realize until now, after looking for the link, that the picture is one of a collection of Da Vinci's (http://www.ownfineart.com/Drawings_of_Leonardo_da_Vinci.htm)
Now I feel like I have good taste, after all, I picked a Da Vinci of all things to model. Cooool, haha.
I'm just dabbling in this tonight, so, just hanging out, relaxing, it won't get done or anything.
But I'll post my progress as I mess around with it tonight, cause, why not?
Besides, modeling to Pink Floyd rocks.
I didn't know it was 12:14. About an hour on it so far. Oh well, I'll spend a couple more hours on it and...It'd be nice if I could model this in one night but not so. I'll try and get the frontal face roughed in though.
I'd like to be able to get good enough to do this in one night. Not yet though.
//Oh yeah, someone else post once in a while.

PM'd you....????

Yeah Joe. I sent an email yesterday, and a PM now in case something got lost somewhere.
...
So here's after, what another 2 hrs I think? Pretty slow eh?
I'm at a loss to explain why, other than lack of experience. I mean, I can look at it and say, that-that-that, then my PC takes 1 second in selecting every point or in doing anything, still, no excuse really.
If in 5 years I can't sit here on a Friday night and at least model a decent recognizable figure in 4 hours then I'd be surprised. I think the general human face should take 1 hour, but more complex faces would take as long as they need to be done properly. And I would hope it won't take me 5 years to get to that level. 2 if I try. Probably 3 if I slack and maybe 5 if life gets in the way.
Otherwise 5 or die.
In the meantime, what can I say? Oh, I know. I had a good time trying anyways. Floyd Rocks + beer + modeling, haha.

Spent more time on my 'crotchety old man' tonight. No beer, no Pink Floyd and no brick walls tonight though. Going sloooow.

Ah man your doing really good!
are you using just one reference image?

Thanks Anhar. I'm just using the one picture so it's a bit more thinking, not bad though.
I found I was making the head a bit thin width wise which actually is kind of cool if it was a charactature, but I had to stretch it out some more. I also have to puff out the cheeks more and the eyes, the dreaded eyes. I'll get back to it near the weekend again.

Very impressed, so far. You're getting a lot of volume out of that image.

What method are you using to model it?

I'm drawing polygons with symmetry on the face. I also extrude groups of edges and make cuts here and there. Keeping everything quads can be a bit tricky, like trying to solve a Rubics Cube sometimes, ha.

Cool, I've rarely gone beyond box modelling for most of my needs, but I don't really delve deep enough into modelling either way.

This is pretty close to being it modelling wise.
A couple things. I forgot to accent in the forehead creases, the neck topology could flow a bit better and the eyes are a teensy bit off.
Minor fixes but I'll certainly be able to use it in a toon animation if even as an extra.
And he could maybe use some eyebrows and eyelashes. I'll skip the nose hair.
And the eyes are standins. You get the idea.
I just projected the original picture onto the model to get an idea of how close it matched up and what it might look like.
It's not properly textured.
That's probably it for updates unless I get him ready for animation but that could be another year yet.
Oh, lol, I just realized the ear isn't quite right. This was my first ear. I'll have to fix that. Ha.

Yeah, looks great Gord. Did you use Zbrush alongside C4D? I'm thinking about getting Zbrush.

Wow - awesome work.
Did you use Bodypaint to UVmap and paint the texture on?

Hey thanks guys.
@Josh: No Z brush, straight modelling. I'm thinking of doing some finer detailing with zbrush but honestly I need the practice getting as much detail in model wise first. Considering that ear screwup for example.
@dj: No bodypaint. It was just a quick test to get a feel for what it might look like. Just frontal mapping with the reference picture. So, it's applied to one side only and with the symmetry it copies onto the other side. Just to get an idea.
@Max: Oh, the guilt I've had for posting with that ear screwup. I should have waited until I tweaked it up more, but...anyways, just for you, and my guilt, here's a quicky fix on the ear. I don't know what I was thinking before. Brain damage maybe.
I'll need another full day to tidy up the rest of the topology I'm thinking. That won't be today though.
(Oh and in the previous post I was experimenting with the camera's focal length so that's why some of the grabs looked flat or squished a bit.)
//edit: I don't know. The more I look at him, I think maybe he might want to pull that old rusted spitfire out of storage for a final run. Not sure.

Are you going to make him come to life?
Raptor365
10-08-2009, 06:36 PM
DJ: Well, ya know, I started this for something to pass the night to relax but now I think I'll finish up the model. I have to fix the topology a bit first, unwrap then bring it into zbrush for detailing like adding wrinklesm skin pores and overall texturing. The other thing is setting up the facial expressions for morphing. The body won't matter because it's a generic clothed skeleton that could be anything. Not worried about that.
Will it come to life? Yeah. Actaully, everything I've ever modelled will see it's way into a video. Waste not want not. The reference about putting this guy into my spitfire and making a short of it is just me thinking of how to utilize my assests to build a story around what I have so far. And dude, lol, there's a story there.
But...I have a first animation that I'm doing first, kind of because it's my first and I have to get a lot of testing out of the way on that one. So no academy awards or whoohoo's on that first outing but it'll be a test of everything I've learned and then I'll see where I'm at kind of thing.
But, I'll squeeze this dude in as a lead-in or an extra, depends how the current project unfolds. Like a say, it'll be a test of everything I've learned to date, and I mean everything I know about everything.
If I can tune this character up a bit, and I will as I learn more in the meantime, I may have a lead role for him after that, aka the spitfire reference. We'
ll see. TONS of work left.
TONS baby. TONS.
Late next year I'll put out my first short/test.
One more year. Then I should be in a position to do something not too embarassing I think as a first outing. Don't forget about the blocking, directing , compositing and rendering issues that lay ahead let alone solving some of the 3D problems. Then texturing issues as in keeping a consistant " artistic look".
Fine if your a damn VFX boutique. But I'm not, so, it takes a bit longer.
That's my outlook right now. One more year dude, and we'll take another step up that ladder. There's too much to do already.
//edit: On the other hand, I should just call myself a director and get everyone else to do my work for me for a screen credit. Ha.

I'm looking for a used Wacom Intuos tablet. Anyone upgrading and want to sell thier old one?

Nice - sounds like fun.
Actually, the projection of a year for a really well-done short film may even be on the ambitious side. As you said, lots of work, lots that can't be easily foreseen. But that would be, in theory, at the international film festival level. What better way to spend your time on earth though?
I've been looking at tablets too - they look pretty nifty for painting textures... more of an intuitive process maybe.
Rock on Rap.

Hey DJ. Yeah, well, the year thing. This year is more for getting that test one out of the way I think, with a little work on the side on the other stuff. Then like you say, "the projection of a year for a really well-done short film may be on the ambitious side". True, but I should have several of the main assets together by that time already so I'll have a head start on it that way.
Yeah, man, honestly, it's overwhelming to think about. But, you gotta push on right? Gotta set goals. Yeah poo poo. Just gotta get through it. Otherwise I'll be one of those guys that never gets out of the basement, and that's not me.
Gotta jump in the fire at some point.
Oh, I haven't slept in a couple days, thus the beer smileys so seemingly early in the day.
