View Full Version : Horizontal lines with proxies

I shoot 1280 x 720 x 50p footage with the GH1 and my NLE is Vegas Pro 8.0b. My computer is not up to playing the avchd files directly so I make 1024 x 576 x 25p mov proxies (and these play fine on my machine in Vegas). The proxies are made with a video utility called AVS Video Converter. But lately, I have seen that with panning shots, there are horizontal glitches triggered by vertical features in the image.

When you step through the proxy footage by single frame, the glitches cannot be seen -- it is only seen in motion. And when I play the same clip in the QuickTime player, the glicthes are not seen even in motion. The glitching is not seen on the camera LCD while shooting, and when I play out original files in the camera to a television, the footage shows no glitching. So I felt confident that, (a) the glitching is not on the original footage (not a camera problem), and (b) even the proxie file plays ok in QT.

So, from this evidence is it really just a Vegas display issue on my old machine (a 3.0 GHz Pentium 4, 2 Gb RAM) ? When I made an uncompressed full size (1280 x 720) avi from the original mts file, it also glitches in the same way as the mov proxy file when I try to play it in Vegas (this is to be expected). But I wonder what this means for my projected workflow? I wish to produce a standard definition DVD within Vegas. I planned to edit with the proxy files, and then substitute them for same-name uncompressed avi's in order to make high quality colour correction and then export a single mpg file from the timeline to make the DVD. If the uncompressed files glitch, I assume the same glitch will appear on the mpg export?

Any advice gratefully accepted. I suppose I should just get a newer machine?
