Seems like they're been a lot of entertainers dying this summer.

Screenwriting guru Blake Snyder died a couple days ago, now John Hughes. Very very sad news.

John Hughes made some great films. RIP.

At least he didn't die at home, alone.

Most of those 80's Hughes comedies were shot in and around my old neighborhood growing up so they had extra resonance for me. The flag at Shermer High School will be at half mast today.

Well said Callaghan. Ferris Bueler pretty much inspired many fake sick from school days for me.

I often feel he doesn't get the respect he probably deserves as a filmmaker
because so much of his work is on the lighter side -
but the man definitely captured an era in a way that few have been able to...
...no matter how many times they try to copy his style.

Hey, I liked John Huges and his films as much as the next guy. But I couldn't resist some slightly tasteless humor. After all, this is how Americans cope with headline tragedy. :)

The vacation movies are classics. All the Home Alone films etc, etc. People will be watching them for years. People might not always know his name but they know his films. Most of us would be thrilled with one or two films like he did.

I realize that and thought it was funny. I couldn't resist replying to the humor you couldn't resist posting. :)

One of Hughes' films that I always loved that doesn't get the attention it deserves is Uncle Buck.

Anybody else really dig that one too?

Ouch! I may speak highly of Spielberg, or Coppola, or whomever, but when I sit down to make a film the work that's always going through my mind is Hughes's. He will be missed.

Very sad news.

Planes, Trains, and Automobiles
Ferris Bueller's Day Off
National Lampoon's Vacation
Weird Science
Some Kind of Wonderful
Breakfast Club

I don't think any other generation will have a portfolio of films, that captured the spirit of their youth, like those films did. And the fact that they all came from the mind of the same man. Incredible. He will be missed.

What's bittersweet for me is that with Planes, Trains and Automobiles you saw a glimpse of the filmmaker he could mature into, making adult comedies every bit as sharp as his teen ones, but he balked. Wish he hadn't pulled a JD Sallinger and retreated from the business, but I guess he had his reasons.

If I could convince my wife to name our soon-to-arrive son Abe Froman Fox, I'd do it. "Ferris" is my favorite comedy of all time.

And Blake Snyder, too? Dang.

Very sad.
After Prom in 1988 ,I took my wife (then my prom date!) to my house and we watched Some Kind Of Wonderful on the 'ole VHS machine. Hughes body of work is Some Kind Of Wonderful....Thank you John. Lets pray for his family...

Just saw this thread and am now officially bummed out. Hughes had a hand in shaping our culture, that's for sure.

Was just thinking one of my favourite films 'High Fidelity' is very Hughesish.

The vacation movies are classics.

Saw #1 and #2 last month. (the vacation house we were staying at had a VCR and the box set)

They hold up well. I mean still REALLY funny.

A great loss to the film world. All his 80's films definitely had an impact on my childhood.

This morning at work (Barnes & Noble), the majority of the morning store meeting was taken up by everyone talking about John Hughes' death. The manager said that they were going to set up a special tribute display with a bunch of John Hughes DVD's. I guess whatever ones they had in stock.

Everyone seemed shocked that he died so young, and all had the same reactions about how his films where very important to them growing up. One person said that, "it felt like he was right there with you in high school."
