More handles can be added underneath but I like this best because it's lightest. Stock adjusts...angles up and stays fine right now (IE camera ends up lower) but right now won't angle down and stay (camera higher) but I will be adding a second part for a bolt to go through to lock it in the most comfortable angled down position. Made from old air-soft stock, some steel pipe, a flange, and some PVC pipe. Adding a quick release assembly to top later. Works nicely for stabilization of static shots, less shakey (for GH1...reminds me of say, HVX handheld shake) running shots, and even sudo-snorricam stuff. Can hold like a rifle, shoot from the hip, hold stock and front handle, cradle the whole unit, or even shoot upside down. So far I'm very happy with results. The gaff tape on the stock helps keep it intact but isn't structurally that important to the unit...you see the stock is being squeezed pretty hard by the PVC pipe and the wing nuts on either side, and the gaff tape helps keep the two halves of the stock (it's a cheap one) from slipping, breaking their screw-mounts, and smashing together....and it's being doing great.
Works great with LCD or viewfinder, but you have to adjust the stock to move the LCD in and out...hopefully tripod quick release will help this (puts camera a bit higher and should let it quickly slide forward. I can also as of now mount the camera or the handle/cameramount further up (other holes drilled) but I like it here because it keeps weight better distributed and viewfinder in reach.

you beat me to it ;) - I'm making one with a folding stock and two pistol grips - so it looks even more like a rifle...

You guys are going to get shot. And not in an artistic sort of way....You know how trigger happy the LAPD are.

I don't know if that's a risk in Davis or Santa Cruz lol...but yeah might draw some funny looks. For public I'd go totally guriella usually anyway...this is more for large, organize shoots, permitted or on more secluded locations...otherwise what's the point of a DSLR? That said I'm happy with the results...i'll admit it does look a little more gun like than say, zacuto's.

Some footage of guys walking down the street and in mall is HVX (obvious shots).
Main performance is RED. Performance at tattoo parlor is 5d.
Everything else is 5d. All 5d shot using the $14 gun stock.
Sorry no HD. I'll see if I can post it up HD.
First shots of guys coming out of house are 5d.

I wanna do a folding stock (not ghetto version but full on composite like it was a rifle) because I think they are very cool if done right ;)
then again my idea may not be that well balanced when it's not unfolded - in which case the $14 gunstock is a great option...
the folding stock piece itself costs $30 ;)
away for two weeks now but will get to this when I get back - out of curiousity are you mounting a follow focus on that also or just the camera ?
I'm actually going to mount mine to my indifocus rails - http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?p=1706111 - if for no other reason than they are strong and stable...and of course cost 1/10th of the price of the redrock eyespy ;)

I could in theory throw rails up on here. Don't have any yet or a follow focus and don't plan on getting one till I go back to school and am doing shoots with a crew. I'll give it a whirl with a friends rails first maybe? I was thinking of adding a quick release though.
No footage yet, I've shot some test stuff but nothing really worth sharing, suffice it to say it was more stable than handheld, and worked better for fast moving and static shots. Various types of holding the thing led to different results that will be better or worse for different situations.

Geez I've had enough trouble going through airport security with 2 video cameras, my GH1, and my lighting kit... I'd imagine having one of these in my carry on would probably delay me for a good while :D

I made it through security just fine with an ogio bag full of my gh1 and accesories, and a tripod strapped to the side...left pipe support system, etc, at home though.

Hey, do you know how I think would love to see this? The president! Yeah, the president loves this type of DIY stuff as well as being into amateur photography. He would really dig something like this; go see him speak, and then afterwards you should run towards him with this (because the president is always in a hurry) and show it to him.
No but this is really cool - very creative.

so with the gunstock or the bush hawk would there be a way to add rails so that we could add follow focus?

Gonna guess it uses that 1/4" bolt sticking out of it.
I was actually looking for this thread to mention that I use my DIY gunstock mount for a ton of my shoots lately...it's just so light and easy to use and really helps out a lot for a variety of different methods of handholding.
