I was reading this article:

http://www.tapestockonline.com/indojewihiss.html

When I noticed something doug said on the last question,
"Q: What are the possible post-production workflow scenarios for the EX1?
EX1 footage can be easily integrated into any HD post-production workflow. Once you get the footage off of the card and into your computer, it’s just like any other footage. Whatever works for you now will work for you with the EX1. Even if you’re still editing SD productions, the EX1 fits in fine. I’ve been shooting 100% HD footage for over two years now, and yet 90% of my post-production work is still done on SD timelines. It’s no big deal working with HD clips. In fact, I’ll miss the days of SD editing when it comes to an end because of the advantages I get with scan/pan effects and cropping HD footage in an SD sequence. My advice is to shoot everything in HD now, whether you need it or not today, so you future-proof your footage! "

I have been hearing different things about outputting to SD from HD footage, and this guy is suggesting I just put the footage into an SD timeline. I have also heard that is not the "proper" thing to do. I do many TV spots for my work, and I'm buying an EX1 soon. I would love to know that it will work fine to just throw an HD final file of an ad onto an SD timeline so I can print it out to tape for the stations. They usually take MINIDV.

Is that cool to do? What about if I shot progressive, and SD TV is interlaced?

I'd love some input.

Thanks

I have one of Doug's DVDs and he mentions this on the DVD as well. Like you, I'm not exactly sure how he goes about it and what the big issue is. I just drag the existing EX1 clips clips onto the timeline and go to work. I don't find working in an HD timeline annoying at all, but maybe that's because my longest piece is less than an hour.

Using HD in an SD timeline can be done in several ways and there are advantages.

1) If you shrink the HD to SD size it can get rid of artifacts.

2) He mentioned pan and scan. If you have a large HD image and there is something interestion on only a part of it, you can follow that interesting thing with no loss of resolution. In a sense you are zooming in on the object to the SD resoluton.

3) You can make a one camera take look like a two camera shot. If you have two people in one HD clip, you can take clips of them separately and cut back together so it seems like you are switching from camera to camera.

There are others. It works.

I think this falls upon the NLE and how it handles this process.

I use Edius and find it works both ways and Panning and scanning is great.

If you know the output will be interlaced, I would shoot in 24p or 60p/50p as they translate the best to interlaced.

Also, I would always shoot progressive as the interlaced artifacts will not be there should you decide to pan and scan.

I view interlaced as a delivery mechanism. It does not play well with other formats nor does it do well when you change it from its original state. Progressive just gives a lot more options.

Hi Bassman

What about 30P? Isn't it true that at full rez the EX1 does not do 60P, but only 60i? Is there something better about going from 60P to 60i(just for delivery) over 30P to 60i?

Thanks

PS I just ordered my EX1 from B&H!! I am so frickin' excited I can't wait.

If by full res you mean 1080p then no, only 720p60.

But no video camera outside of RED does 1080p60.

1080p30 is kind of in-between. You will have a little stutter, so it does not look like 24p or the smooth motion of 60p.

It all works, but I prefer to stay with a 24 or 60 based framerate if going to DVD (60i).

Did some messages disappear in this thread? I thought Doug Jensen had responded with a suggestion to work right in an SD timeline with HD footage. I had a question about distortion. When you drop a HD file into a 740 x 480 timeline it looks distorted. My friend and I have, through trial and error set the aspect ratio to -33 on the clips, and it seems to come out looking right when played on SDTV.

Does anyone else do this?
