Instead of waiting for them to come to you, why don't you go after them?
There are several VFX websites out there, and many of the artists are looking for projects to work on. Look at a few demo reels, make a wish list, and contact them directly, starting with your top choice and working your way down. The worst they can say is no.
Before contacting them, I would suggest having most of your key elements in place. That might include your director's reel, a very good script (duh!), cast, location, prop and costume photos, a crew list including a first rate dp and composer, a realistic schedule, and a storyboard clearly showing what effect you want them to do.
Basically you want to assure them that it's worth the effort, since little if any compensation is involved.

Hey Maximus...Sounds good...I am still waiting to get that all in place. So I will defiantly do that once some things are more solidified. Thanks!

Yep Matt good luck mate, Visual FX is a very difficult one i think to get favours for cos its time consuming and tough work - having a modest budget will make a huge difference for getting some talented dude to help out!
