- dvxuser screening - worked out some rough ideas with Geoff.
- Worked out some ideas with Sarah. She wasn't crazy about having a vampire hooker going around eating babies... go figure. :zombie_smiley:

Aug 12
- Jessica Sinclair added to the cast - sexy vampire #1 baby!!!

Aug 13
- Shoot dates are scheduled for October 2nd and 3rd.
- Rough draft should be finished early next week.
- As soon as the script is close to final draft, FrameForge 3D or 3ds Max will be used to set up different shots... I'm leaning more towards 3ds Max...
- In talks with Geoff to schedule a pre-production meeting to go over script and shots.

Aug 26
- Preproduction meeting with Geoff went well. We worked out a lot of technicalities.
- Jessica tells me she can't make it for the shoot. :(
- Now I need to cast and actor and 2 actresses.

Not to pee on your fire, but I highly recommend picking either acting or directing. Or, if you absolutely have to do it, only play a small role and direct. I've tried this and it's very difficult and watched others try. This usually only works properly if you're Mel Gibson or Clint Eastwood and have 20+ years of constant acting experience and can act without even thinking about it (and thus devote your energy into directing).

Shawn, out of curiosity, in what capacity were you directing? Were you setting up shots yourself or did you rely on a DP to handle that for you?

How much were you involved with actually focused on technical details while shooting?

How much pre-production did you do? Did you do storyboards and everything? My goal is to have everything planned out in such detail that Geoff will be able to just set up the shots based on storyboards (and some discussion of course).

Did you do any rehearsals? If so, how many?

My first short film I did, I wrote, produced, directed, and played a major supporting role in and I have to tell you, while I was doing it, I wanted to slit my wrists, ankles, femoral artery, and neck, then sit in a pool of lemon juice until I blessedly went to the great beyond!

HOWEVER, afterwards, and going through the post process with two different professional editors and the score composer, I definitely am glad that I did it. It was such a HUGE learning experience for both acting and directing. Now I just focus on one or the other unless I HAVE to do both, but having done it before, I now know the pitfalls to watch out for.

Tom, if you plan this out, trust your crew, and know what you are searching for in every shot, scene, etc... then I have confidence that we'll be fine.

I also rented a bunch of gear w/ a 1/2 ton grip package, got the rental truck, picked up the rented camera from the owner, and a bunch of other details. And while shooting, I could have definitely seen myself playing one of the lead roles (and really wanting to) while directing.

A few of the shorts I've been in, I kind of wanted to take the reigns and direct. I think I would have done an OK job.

Another thing is, this is a light comedy. It's nothing really dramatic, so I'm not too worried about the characters as much as if it were a heavy drama...

Bottom line is, this is something I really want to try and do. Hopefully it will be OK, but like Jai said, as long as everything is in place, we should manage to make something that isn't horrible... lol

It's so far out because Jessica wouldn't be able to make it out here until October. She's shooting with Rodney somewhere towards the end of September and she lives in Toronto.

Plus it will give me more time with pre-production...

Thanks Simon. Yeah, this one is more to just have fun and do some acting and directing. The problem with the other one is I'm just such a perfectionist when it comes to this stuff... I still want to do Dark Hearts, but it would cost me a little too much money and a whole lot of time. I might do that before I venture out to do a feature or I might just let it go...

I posted a casting notice on Breakdown Services and have had about 100 girls respond so far. It's surprisingly easy to find an actress... not so easy to find a good one though. A few of the actresses have pretty good credits, actually... :)

On my next short, I will start using Breakdown Services. Much better actors step forward than what you get from a Backstage ad. On this round, I'm fortunate to already have a cast of actors I've worked with before, except the 10 year old boys.

Though i gotta say, i would rather have seen a bolder monster attempt for a movie anyway Tom, untitled hookers project always sounded a little juvenile for my liking. Perhaps consider something utterly simple but evocative, you are an actor yourself - could you not make a film to webcam or mobile phone etc.

If your eager to participate then sometimes expediency as it were can bring about the most imaginative ideas of all.
