This is the most fun thing to film. And the hardest. You must..get shot, protect your camera, get shot, film through a mask and get shot some more. LOL

I have been getting alot of negative comments on my video on another forum. They say it is 90% underexposed. Could you please post your opinion on the exposure?

I think it's a touch underexposed, makes the saturation and contrast look a bit off as well.

Slight underexposed

But so was The Godfather.

Make sure your monitor is calibrated and use you levels in your NLE.

I would highly suggest you invest in a ref shield. I used one of those circular plastic sleds that I placed hand holds on back in the day when I filmed paintball professionally.

I like the shots looking down the lane towards their start box in the beginning half of the film. Even though you are getting hit since you are standing in a lane, keep the camera still. Drape a loose towel down in front of the camera so that takes the hits and you don't. That's what I did at IAO.

I also liked your shot following the snake player as he moved up.

Watch the towel too. It has a tendency of chillin out on the left of the frame.

Generally for a paintball film, what you are lacking is general action. Not hearing the game takes a lot out of it. Your pacing is slow. Check out Derder or some of the old 720 DVDs. And the earlier MWAG DVDs - their new ones drag.

But if paintball is the thing you want to film, you have to pick up the pace and look for new shots. And get more than just breakouts and people chilling out at stand ups. I think the action you have is just too slow and is cut too slow. But, to each his own.

Good luck with it man. It's not looking too bad aside from being underexposed.

Thanks...

Matty.. I move the camera all over the feld trying to achive what you are talking about. Im guessing you got to film pros...so action comes to you easy. I filmed for 3 hours with these guys...and this is the best action shots I could get. Do you think I should try to actually get in the field?? I am just on the outskirts now. Thanks

It looked like you were on a tripod a lot. Might want to try the handheld thing a bit. Snap in and try and get some action-type inserts and ECUs. The more angles you can cram into the time that you have of one guy doing a certain thing in a certain place, the better you can make your coverage seem. I would also suggest shooting some high shutter 24p stuff to intercut with the slo-mo. A hack for instant slo-mo on the HVX that I use is to set two scene files that are identical except for their frame rates. You have to switch in-between takes, no speed ramp, but it's still a button on the camera (the scene file dial) instead of going into the menu. I don't know if your control is the same but I would assume so since they're both kind of in the same family of camera, the same genus if you will.

Hmmmm. I was shooting 720 60p 1/2000. You are sugesting trying 24p? Interesting. And are you telling me that by using the file scene dial to another setting...it had different frame rates? I thought you could only change that in the menu.

I am also under the impression that you can only change frame rates in the menu. If scene files change it I'd be very interested.

Sorry guys, didn't check back on this for a while...

Yes, since frame rate is a scene file setting, if you save a scene file with the frame rate set to 60, and then you have the scene file next to it tweaked so the settings are identical, set the frame rate on the second to 24p and you're gravy.

You want to keep your settings straight though or you'll end up with slightly mismatched footage. I mess with the color temperature a lot so sometimes some of the stuff is warmer/cooler than the other. Nothing I can't deal with in the CC though.

Keep in mind I'm working with the HVX and have never touched the HMC150. But there's a good chance you can do the same thing.
