a monster could mean a lot of things

Relax: its around Halloween time so they're going to have fun with it, not impose an ridiculous rules on us. I think we'll have monsters of all shapes and sizes.. short and tall, skinny and possibly even Fat...

Zim
07-26-2009, 09:36 AM
that is what i was talking about Puck. A monster could mean a lot of things. But they might put a little twist in the rules.

Rodney V. Smith
07-26-2009, 09:43 AM
Ahh they just want us to have fun and actually make movies. The rules are just there to keep us in check and make sure we're not running off completely wild. I really wouldn't sweat it cuz they're not going to redefine the meaning of "monster" or limit it to one meaning. If there's a twist in the rules it will be something completely reasonable and that is attainable by everyone, which also doesn't limit our creativity.

Unless... hmm... they wouldn't do THAT would they?

Nah... anything but THAT!

not possible...

Brandon Rice
07-26-2009, 09:45 AM
I am excited to see people branch off and utilize the meaning of monster to the fullest.

Awesome.

Yes, "monster" could mean a lot of things, but I hope we at least get some conventional monsters. It is halloween, after all. We don't need too many "my dad was a childbeating monster" films, let's have some fun here... :)

This.

I am hoping the rules in place don't force us to create an actual monster (vampire, blob, Godzilla, etc.). Hopefully, a "monster" can be defined in different ways.

Jason Ramsey

Monster will be pretty wide open... We were originally going to do a zombiefest II, but figured this would include that and leave it open for some other folks.

Don't forget though, this is our "dark" themed fest of the year, so things will generally lean towards that kind of world, but it's pretty wide open as well.

Just enough theme to get accepted.

I've gone out of my way in the past to include it but that doesn't seem to matter when it comes to the voting.
Unless they come up with a secondary rating system that includes a 'theme' scale. :)

I like that the theme is usually pretty open though, I have no issues with that.

Your lesson is correct. I had to learn the same thing on 48 hour film project. They state even more: theme, character, line of dialogue and prop. I used mine religously, and then lost to a film that BARELY used any of it and the judges didn't care. The only purpose of such restrictions is to try and make sure the films weren't made months ago and resurrected.

Zaza, I like you. You really misinterepreted my post greatly. My post had nothing to do with camera choice or studio (I've never used a studio in my life), my point was limited strictly to location choice. Anyone, from a Red owner to a cell-phone camera operator can choose to get out of their apartment. I was merely pointing out that DVXUser viewers dont seem to care, but I personally agree with JR

EDIT: After re-reading my post, which definitely makes no mention of Red, studios, etc, I have no clue where you got your post

I just booked a few tickets on a Russian Soyuz spacecraft... I'm leaving the planet to shoot my short which is essentially a re-enactment of the Apollo moon landing except when Buzz steps onto the lunar surface, there is a horrific surprise awaiting him... a group of moon zombies.

This is all part of my plan to increase awareness to my feature intentions, aptly titled, 'moon zombies' in which these lunar zombies hijack spacecraft and come infect earth.

One thing I'm sure of... is that you don't need any particular level of production gear to make a good video. Some of the projects with the highest level of equipment have been the most boring to me.

Just because it's shot on RED doesn't mean it will hold my interest for more then 30 seconds.

Don't feel threatened by gear... it has very little to do with telling an interesting story.

People with good gear tend to hang on neat looking shots and artistic crap that gets boring quickly... pacing and story arc are everything.

Just got off the phone with Anatoly Perminov, my main Russian contact and more importantly, the now co-producer of the project...(he really dug the script!) He's taking it into consideration, Brandon. I originally convinced him to send just myself, a makeup artist and the cast aboard the rocket, but I stressed that having an AC would really help accelerate the pace of filming. I had a horrible dream last night of trying to pull focus in zero g and as my hand tried rotating the barrel of my nikon prime, I started spinning around the camera... perhaps an AC is a necessity?

And the winning film of QuestFest was shot on the $1500 GH1. With no audio, probably because the GH1 doesn't make additional microphones or monitoring audio easy, so they just reworked the film to not require any dialogue.

For anyone making zombie flicks:

Please stay true to the classic zombie. Don't pull any of this "super human" zombie crap. Zombies are slow and dumb. What makes them so scary is their pure numbers. The fact that no matter how many you kill, they will never stop coming at you. They will keep coming and coming and coming. Not the fact that they can run/jump better than Olympic athletes....

I like the idea of leaving the audience wondering.

Those were not zombies in 28 days later. Why does everyone say they were. Not zombies! Zombies are things that come out of the grave or morgue and they're hungry for brains.

excorcist / omen / rosemarys baby / evil dead = devil and biblical stuff

28 days later = scientific virus (nothing wrong with that)

night / dawn / day of the dead / WWZ = romero left it unexplained (which is cool)

bottomline - monster fest can be anything

I do believe that Zombie's have been done. Done to death, brought back to life and done to death again. What the hell else is there to do? Oh, a movie from the zombie's perspective. What that's been done. I guess that settles it, zombies are old hat.

Return of the living Dead

In terms of Zombies being done to death, there really aren't many GOOD Zombie movies.
So there is reason to keep tapping into the genre.

Vampires have been done to death more, and they are as popular as ever.

The zombies in Planet Terror were created by nerve gas or something along those lines.

I'm a pretty big zombie buff and my top 3, in no order are:
Night of the Living Dead
28 Days Later
Shaun of the Dead

I can appreciate the horror behind the rabid/fast zombies... especially in that the premise for them is specifically tailored for our modern fears.

Anyway, as for my film-- there is only one zombie. :D

we've got a draft posted that we are double, triple, quadruple checking. Just a bit slow going at the moment due to travel and stuff of some of us...

There will be a required element more than likely, but nothing too crazy. There will NOT be a pitch process this time. Deadline will be October 30th...

Hard details to come soon... maybe tomorrow morning or by mid afternoon. We'll try our best.

I know you guys are anxious. Just hang with us a bit longer :)

later,
Jason

Whatever happened to zombies being supernatural? What's with this "virus" nonsense? Bring back the magic, bring back the evil, ditch the germs... that's what I say.

Yeah! Why hasn't anyone finished the Weekend at Bernie's Trilogy?!

I'm not sure a 'good' one can be done. The antag is a mindless creature set to eat brains. We know that all the protag has to do is blow their head off and the problems solved. This simplicity doesn't help the drama. Yes the amassing hordes is a threat (you run out of ammo), but it's been done. It's just such a narrow theme. I think the only success a zombie film can have is as a comedy like 'Shaun of the Dead.' But again that's been done.:zombie_smiley:
'I Am Legend' was close to being good, but then again those won't really zombies.

I AM LEGEND sucks the gay out of Liberache's anus! Read the book and you'll just think, "Why?" Such a great intellectual property ruined.

You raise a very good point chris, but I still think it can be done. All this craziness around your characters allows their truest traits to show through. You can have antags within your protags. The key is to keep the film about your main set of characters, and have the zombies be a constant outside threat.

Totally agree Rod, but that does go for most novels to film adaptations. I Am Legend was more Vampires though... It was George A. Romero who took Matheson's Vampires and turned them into hordes of Zombies.

Much better than that piece of Chit I AM LEGEND.

Running Zombies / Slow Zombies
MAC / PC
DVX / XL1

An age old debate.

I welcome both spins on the genre. Slow or Fast.

Correct. And the remake of dawn of the dead...

Great film. A lot of fun.

[quote=Chris_Keaton;1700689]Those were not zombies in 28 days later. Why does everyone say they were?

Everyone says they are because on the 28 Days Later poster it says
"Danny Boyle reinvents the Zombie genre"

I agree though, they arent zombies. They are rabid plague victims.

I suppose one definition of a Zombie is someone who (per Wiki)

A zombie is a mythical creature that appears in folklore and popular culture typically as a reanimated corpse or a mindless human being

And they really are just that, a new spin on an old idea.

Exactly. The genre needed a reinvention and got it. 28 DAYS LATER is scary and a fab film. How can one no tlike it ? Unless wearing Romero Goggles ...

In my Zombie world, I have the FRESH FACTOR. The fresher the zombie, the faster ... the older? Slower.

You are correct, even about the anus part. The original written piece was awesome and by changing the ending, which I think all movie versions did, they ruined the whole point of the story. That was travesty of adaptation, but what I meant were the monsters were cool.

I Am Legend is one of my dream projects; they ruined it with the Will Smith version; resembles nothing of the book.

The book is credited with inspiring Romero's NighotLDead as well as inspiring Stephen King to become a writer. One day, damn it, I will make I AM LEGEND.

LOL! I was going to post the EXACT same thing! Even ending it mid quote and bailing since everyone around here probably knows it, just as you did.

Actually, what I wanted to do was come up with some clever parody, like "In space, no can hear you ADR" or something like that, but that was the best one I came up with and I thought it was lame, so that's why I bailed. :D

Exactly! I had such high hopes for it too with the trailers (especially after really enjoying Francis Lawrence's other movie Constantine). I understand that it might have been tough to explain two types of vampires but not impossible... and he was suppose to be the LAST... what the heck was that.

But really it was the ending. The ending is what makes the original story so impacting and if anything that is where the title comes from. Instead of a werewolf or loch ness monster being a legend... it's a human that will go on in legend in a world full of vampires.

I do hope you get to make it John. I'm gonna remake the Star Wars prequels:)

I might have to borrow from Rod and go for
"The return of Liberache's anus" for my Monster project.

It's a deep subject with so much to expand upon.

Besides I think George would like it. :-P
