has anyone ever built their own mattebox or sunshade from plastic or metal of some kind. i've read about some soft matteboxes, i was just wondering if anyone has made anything more resiliant?

There are several examples of DIY boxes here with various materials. You will have to dig back a bit.

I built my own out of some vinyl sheets that I got at a craft store it works well if you are still interested I probably work up some instructions with pictures
