View Full Version : Why does HPX 170 break up shots into separate files?

Can I keep the camera from breaking up longer takes/shots into separate files? Is this a P2 limitation? I know I can bridge them later with FCP, but I much prefer bringing them in as shots and then taking subclips from the master clips. When shots are bridged in FCP the have to be in a sequence, so only other sequences can be pulled rather than subclips. Anyone know what I'm talking about and how to change it?

No. The P2 cards are FAT32 format, which allows for a max 4 GB file size.

damn that's some long takes. the editor must have a rough logging process.

The files re-assemble in a NLE when imported, if imported correctly... Its not rough at all..

It's hard to believe that there's no work around for this. I shot an interview, more than 30 minutes without stopping camera roll and the largest file (after ingesting to FCP) is 4.06GB, or 4:55 shot at 720/30. What is curious is that the entire 30 min+ was not broken down into 4.06 GB pieces, but rather 3-4 clips that size and a dozen or so others of varying size from 3+GB down to under 1GB. Why would the camera arbitrarily make these 'cuts' leaving clips of various sizes? Why can't I do anything about it?
For an doc style editor, it's actually very convenient to have the whole interview ingested in larger clips, because it's a common technique when working from tape to digitize whole tapes as single clips. From here it's easy to make subclips and edit from those. When the material needs to be bridged together it has to be done in a sequence. Now you can't pull a subclip, but instead only another shorter sequence (sort of a sub-sequence). That means that to edit the 'clip' that spans the two clips, it has to come from the bridged sequence and in FCP, that means editing sequences into sequences, which is more complicated. I won't even get into how this throws off my organization of clips and sequences in FCP....

I may be misunderstanding what you are trying to say. But, FCP seamlessly connects your spanned clips into one as you go through the log and transfer process. You should not be seeing separate clips. If the camera continued to record (without stopping and starting) you should have one long clip.

It created the file sizes based on the space on the cards. When it could make 4 GB chunks, it did. When it had to split up into smaller sizes because it had to span cards, it did.
As I said, it's because the cards are FAT32 and there's a file size limit of 4 GB. There's no setting to change this; it's just the way it works.
As others have said, NLEs (though not all) will make a single file out of these.
