NATIVE FILES available for download
(this is for those who are waiting for their camera)
Two midnight street shots at 1080p
I didn't feel like hanging around and making the shot look perfect as its the middle of the night and I've had a few drinks and I value my GH1. So this is down, dirty and fast ... nothing like my piece 'Curtains' in gallery secton.
But... its media straight off the card and for workflow purposes then maybe you might find it useful.
TECHIE DETAILS
GH1 film mode = smooth
wb=tungsten (to match street lights)
iso 400
shutter 1/30
canon fd 50mm at f1.4
focus pretty close to infinity
FHD mode so its 1080p24 embedded in a 60i stream
All original media, metadata and folder structure is stored on the SDHC card in a folder called PRIVATE which is in the zip file
also included are downsampled quicktimes at 720p24 h264 at 3mbps
85meg zip file is a here
http://www.yousendit.com/download/Y1RvNHB3aFJ0NjgwTVE9PQ
This is me using YouSendIt to send it to myself so it should be good for 7 days or 100 downloads.
If the link doesn't work for you post on this thread so I will know and update it.
EDIT: link updated Aug 12, 09
EDIT: 720p60 downloads at this thread LINK (http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?t=177760)

thanks for the raw files, this is what we need to evaluate the real camera, not vimeo or youtube files.
downloading now!

This footage is a great suggestion to others to try and do similar with their samples. It's not as easy as posting to Vimeo but working with the real files eliminates any web compression/vimeo issues. This is very useful for evaluating the actual noise levels, banding & mud issues present or not present in GH1 footage.
All this being said this footage looks pretty good and doesn't exhibit the mud and noise I've seen in other footage. It's encouraging to see this from the original files and from FHD 1080 footage.
J. Davis, you choose to shoot at 400 ISO and that looks pretty clean noise-wise. What about 800 ISO from your limited experience so far?

I also was very interested in the results of low light and high ISO and for my first GH1 narrative test piece I shot at 1000 ISO as well as testing audio sync. You can see it here LINK (http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?t=176768) Unfortunately I no longer have the original .mts native files as I run a pretty tight ship space wise on my mac ... too many simultaneous projects I guess.
EDIT: to get 1000 ISO and other 'in between' iso setting in movie mode you have to switch to Manual still mode and change to one of the new options. Then switch back to movie mode and all the new ISO setting appear. They don't go away either. Even after turning the camera on and off all the new ISO settings stay in Movie mode.
The new list of ISO settings becomes 100, 125, 160, 200, 250, 320, 400, 500, 640, 800, 1000, 1250, 1600

Saw that one but thanks for the link. Probably should've asked about that clip in that thread but oh well. Was the bar video 720 or 1080? Even at 1000ISO the video is still under-exposed. But again no horrible banding or dancing noise.
Am I the only one that would like if we just went back and started calling gain - gain and drop the ISO guessing game? Sure ISO values are nice for lighting but wouldn't it also be nice to simply have next to the ISO the gain value. I didn't go out of my way in the past to shoot +12 gain. With ISO nobody but the manufacturers really know what ISO value is actually the native ISO for the camera and hence which ones are adding gain. So all of the sudden 1600 ISO doesn't sound scary because 1600 ISO on some cameras might only be +6 gain while on others is +18. So for every camera you have to research and test to know what ISOs you can and can't use. But I can pick up any video camera and know +12 gain is not somewhere you want to go unless you have to no matter what camera I'm using. It would also take the mystery out of which VDSLRs are faster natively than others because you could know that 800ISO is no gain on camera A but +6 on camera B - hence camera A is faster. Now we all study images and try to guess what looks better - which can be more of an evaluation of which camera handles gain better than others without anybody really knowing the basic simple fact of what ISO is actually 0 gain?
Sorry for off topic rant.
Nathan, „what ISO is actually 0 gain?“ - I would like to make a proposal to answer this question – please excuse my English.
Take your camcorder and set gain = 0. Focus on whatever scene you like. Set appropriate shutter speed and aperture for the actual light. Then, take your ancient lightmeter from the analog photography days and measure the light of the scene. Finally dial the shutter speed and aperture from your camorder into the lightmeter and read the corresponding ISO. I did this for my Panasonic HDC-SD100 with three 1/6“ chips and came out with a „Base Sensitivity“ of 100 ISO at gain = 0. From thereof, factor 2 in ISO means 3 dB (log 2 = .301). So, for my camcorder 3 dB = 200 ISO, 6 dB = 400 ISO and so forth. For the GH1 you have to go the opposite way to read gain from ISO.
„Base Sensitivity“ has something to do with pixel area, so I would suppose sensors with greater Pixel/sensor area should come out with a higher „Base Sensitivity“ at 0 dB gain.
So, this is my fifth contribution, always open for discussion and correction.

Hi J. I tried this suggestion but when I went to Manual still setting I still had the same list of ISO's.
Were these additional ISO's made available by the firmware upgrade? If so, it's weird 'cuz I just got my camera and it shows Firmware version 1.1 out-of the box.
wondering if I still need to do the firmware download.?

I haven't updated my firmware so its not that.
I don't have the camera with me right now but from memory there are several ways to access the ISO setting. I think its called the quick menu button on top of the camera, or by actually going into the menu system and going to ISO. When you are in manual still mode try both of these ways to change your ISO. You should be able to find the 'in between' options somewhere. Once you select one then turn the dial back to movie.
