I'm dying tonite. My mp4 files won't run in quicktime. They run fine in vlc and mpc.
I used Megui to make best quality h264 from cineform originals, but QT won't play em!
I hate quicktime!:violent5:
Quicktime complains of error 2002 bad public movie atom.
Arrrrggggghhhhhhhh! The render was done and ready yesterday! Now I'm back in the render game.

Hey mate.
What platform? and what NLE?
Sony Vegas 8.0c on Vista 32bit using NeoScene then final render using Megui.
I'm rendering out using sony AVC straight out of Vegas. Not as high of quality, but I think QT won't complain.

Also, when I went back to Vegas to check the levels in my waveform monitor, the blacks were underwater. I added a levels adjust to get them back to 0. I'm using Magic Bullet Looks for some shots and it looks like some of the std. looks can drop the color below 0. I wonder if expects 7.5% setup???

I'm doing vegas ---> cineform ----> mpeg streamclip ----> h.264 mp4 file. Final output looks great!

I went just from Vegas to Mainconcept mp4. It doesn't play completely in sync in Quicktime player but right on in every other player and NLE.
Hopefully, people will be using players other then Quicktime.
Best of Luck,
Andy

As far as your black levels, my understanding is that h264 compensates for problems that might not be there with a not so straight gamma curve. And you can't just compensate for it because some viewers compensate for the compensation. Someone posted about issues with that on the CML list a while back, which included some articles on the subject.

I got through my QT issue. I was just letting the framerate be 23.976. Apparently, after a certain file length the framing must have gotten off. When I added a conform to 24000/1001 statement, the megui render got better and QT stopped complaining.
I also ended up adding a levels adjust just in case. The dynamic range will be smaller now, but there was no time to waffle about it.
