I used to use one for a dolly, but it only really works on extremely smooth surfaces.

If that is what you have access to, and you've got a smooth surface, then use it. You would be in good company - if you watch the movie El Mariachi all of the dolly moves are done with a wheel chair - so you would be in good company.

For The Evil Dead, Raimi used one. For rougher terrain, they put down plywood and dollied across that.

If you put a large bean bag in the wheel chair and strap the DVX to the top, it's like a CINESADDLE that absorbs the bumps and gets the camera up around chest level. Looks funny but is smooth.

Also tried a cardboardbox or two stacked in the wheelchair with the DVX on top strapped to a CINESADDLE or any other mini bean bag. Not to shabby.

I used one on my short film, Those Sneaky Devils! Some people have told me that shot was their favorite/ funniest part of the movie. I just sat in the wheelchair and propped the camera up on a totally compressed monopod. I called action and my soundrecordist (it was an MOS shot) pushed me through the course. It was a ceramic tile floor, but you cannot see the "bumps" in the final shot, it was really smooth. I plan to keep the wheelchair just in case, even though I have a real dolly with track now. You never know.

I used one with 30 lbs of cement in the seat in an art gallery here in Minnesota once, and just took a 3x4, clamped it to the armrests, drilled a hole through the wood and attached a camera head to one side

It was a little bumpy even though the floor was super super smooth and even, would've helped if I was in the chair with a monopod or some such nonsense, and it would of helped if the camera itself wasn't a little shitebox (canon zr60) versus something with a weight to it.

If the wheels are inflatable on the wheelchair (like the old ones), try to let some air out. It'll make a huge diffrence.
