DVXUSER.COM PRESENTS AdFest: Trailerfest 2 - trailery-er

Product: A non-existing film. Thats right .. For this round the Ads (trailers) must again be promoting a film that doesnt actually exist. Use your skill, talent, and creativity and come up with a slick trailer promoting the film you've always wanted to make, but that DOES NOT ACTUALLY EXIST. Remember this is an advertising fest, so these should be real trailer ads that anyone could watch and understand to promote the film if they were on TV.

Good luck to all the filmmakers and we look forward to your entries!

Rules (please read carefully, we may have some NEW rules)

trailers can be in any genre as long as they adhere to the above theme. If you have any questions about whether your trailer conforms to the theme please ask.
All trailers must be no longer than 2 minutes (2:00:00) total (including any credits should you wish to include them although it might be sort of odd for a trailer).
To be very very clear, the film you are creating a trailer for cannot exist as a feature, short, student project, or in any visual capacity whatsoever. Basically if the film footage exists at all ..even if it is still currently in production, you cannot use it. This is to stop people from cutting a trailer using already existing materials as the point is to create a unique and original project for the fest. This does not mean you cannot use an idea that has been used before (for example: if you want to make a trailer for "star wors: vengence of the sith lords" ..knock your socks off). it just means that if youve already made a short about it you cant simply hack old footage from it and cut a trailer. ..any questions? just shoot me a PM.
The following elements must be included:

Film Title (show the films title during the trailer any way you want),
DVXuser leader : www.rowecine.com/exhibition/adfest_traileryer_leader.mov (http://www.rowecine.com/exhibition/adfest_traileryer_leader.mov) this must be at the beginning of your film--no exceptions! (the runtime of the leader does not count against your minute so your total run time can be over one minute by the exact length of the leader only).
REQUIRED ELEMENT: All trailers must CLEARLY include a fish of any kind (alive, digital, hand drawn, stock footage) this must be included in at least one scene. Guys--don't be too subtle here--we want to see a fish clearly. this is to push your creativity a bit.
All cameras are eligible to participate and for prizes.

Content must be "PG-13" rated or lower. If you are unsure; ASK. (why PG-13? ..because you should be studying making real trailers. Not ones that would never air. This forces you to actually think inside the box of the real world of advertising films.)
No copyright violations, you *must* use licensed or royalty-free music, images, sound, ect. and have full rights to your finished peice. All filmmakers agree to grant DVXuser.com and its agents non-exclusive rights for their commercials to appear on a DVD or for DVXuser-sanctioned public screenings.
Deliverables must be provided as an h.264 compressed file (either .mov or .mp4) with a maximum size of 30 MB. Uploading website will be announced in the future.
All aspect ratios are acceptable.
Contest open to every country and films may be in any language. Non-English films must have English subtitles.
All trailers must be made between July 1st, 2009 and August 31st, 2009 and must not have been publicly screened prior to the start of viewing. The entry deadline is 11:59 pm Pacific Time on August 31st, 2009. The upload system is not yet open; we will announce when uploading is open.
Promotion of your trailer is not allowed off of this site whatsoever.
Voting is limited to members with a minimum of 50 posts on the site. Other restrictions may be announced when voting is opened.
trailers may be entered in other festivals as long as they aren’t screened prior to August 31st, 2009.
Users may enter their film anonymously, but must clear this with the DVXUser moderators before they post their film thread in the forum.
All films will be prescreened by DVXFest staff for compliance with festival rules. Entries that aren't approved will be notified by a moderator and may be re-submitted with corrections up until the deadline. The festival moderators have sole and final say, on a case by case basis if necessary.
No entry fee.
You may enter up to two trailers as the primary filmmaker. There is no limitation to how many films you may work on.
Prizes, if any, will be announced.
Uploading details will be announced in the near future. When screening opens, films will not be listed alphabetically, they will be listed for viewing in the order received.

deadline updated. :)

One person writes a post and you change the dates? Don't know if I agree with that one. I think you have to remember that July and August are vacation months and for those of us with kids...VERY busy summer months.

I was really looking forward to entering, but now with the changed dates, I don't think it will be possible.:(

"You can please some of the people all of the time and all of the people some of the time, but you can't please all of the people all of the time!"

...by the way, is that guy who posted even entering a film in this fest?

yep. dates changed. it was a little long to begin with as i only had it set for that long out because i didnt want it to interfere with questfest projects..or the following fest projects, but i think well be safe. im trying to go along with the generality taht these mini fests should run more often than quarterly to offer an in-between or alternative to the regular quarterly fests. nobody has put anything into it yet so its a good time to shore up the dates before any real work goes into it.

..i hear you with the kids though. ive got some of those myself and were completely jammed through the summer. however, you could still make something and just make it less involved (.. could just be a 30 sec spot that rocks better than anything 2 minutes long with not enough real content to fill it), or just jump in the next one. either way, just enjoy your summer, and well see you next time around though if you cant make this one.

Hi Zaza,

I’m genuinely regretful if Neil’s decision to bring the deadline forward means that you’ll be unable to participate in this fest, and hope that you recognize that that wasn’t actually what I was originally campaigning for. That said, I do think that something more along the lines of a bi-monthly turnaround will suit this little underdog of a fest, and help aid its survival, lurking as it is within the shadow of the main DVXfest.

As I suggested towards the end of my last post within the thread to which you linked, I AM prepared to try to put aside my reservations about the current theme, in order to do my damnedest to contribute, as I believe that this side-fest carries great potential, and I have to say, you have definitely inspired me to work harder at doing so!

I can certainly understand your frustration towards some newbie-upstart’s post immediately influencing the official rules, and F’ing up your plans – and believe me, I wasn’t expecting such an immediate reaction! However, I think that the reason behind Neil’s decision wasn’t so much about pleasing little old me, as it was about taking my suggestions onboard for the benefit of Ad-Fest as a whole.

As I said, it would be a great shame if the revised deadline meant that you would be unable to participate this time around, and if it would help, I’d be (somewhat reluctantly) willing to send you a few stills of Ol’ Muggins here for a last minute, bobble-headed entry!

Best of luck with ‘Miss Laid’, and I’ll be sure to leave a review – hope there are no hard feelings!

yep. dates changed.

No worries Neil. As you know I totally support these trailer fests. I could only enter as an exhibition last one (didn't read the rules correctly...duh) and was really looking forward to entering this one. I'm hoping there will be more & I'll try my best to get something together. Thanks for listening.

Danny-
No hard feelings...no worries...and I hope I didn't offend you in any way either. After flubbing the last one, I was all set to get one together for the next and Oct. was perfect timing for me (and what I had in mind). Then YOU had to come along and ruin the world! LOL!! (just kiddin'):)

I agreed with a lot of what you said in the original post...lets hope these mini-fests keep growing. I'll be watching for your entry and it had better be good after all this talk. (again...just kiddin'):Drogar-Smoke(DBG):

Now... about that picture for the bobble-head.....

These dates might not work for you Zaza, but as a student, this is PERFECT. I leave for school in late August, so this gives me something AWESOME to do during the summer.

I'm sooo glad Adfest is trailers again, because I, like you Zaza, misread the rules in the last fest. I thought it meant you had to have camera footage, not a physical camera in your trailer. But now that I know I'm not supposed to capture footage with a fish, I'm all set. I can't wait! Expect to see two entries from me =)

Thanks Neil for organizing all this. Your the best!

Is this the next 'major' fest, or will this run in parallel to whatever comes after QuestFest?

as long as it wasnt shot already prior to this ad fests dates. its a great chance to really make something appear bigger than it is and simply showcase an idea rather than a complete story.

Unfortunately I ALWAYS have to shoot with my own gear. No rental shops or schools near me with equipment. Makes it fun though.

I'm just curious how you'd actually know if someone used old footage and hacked it together for a trailer. I mean, you can hope for the honor system, just wondering. It seems kind of tough to know.

The required element (in this case, a fish) is designed to prevent using old footage, but the honor system is unquestionably in place. That's okay; I've found that the dvxuser membership, with very rare exceptions, play fair.

..yeah, as mentioned the required element is there to force people to have at least one new shot in there somewhere, and it would be obvious if it stood out from the rest. also if the old footage is any decent or worth using its likely been shown or used somewhere where people are likely to recognize it and call you on it, or it could even show its age through what you see. IE everyone is in 80's clothing.. even people in background and all cars are from 80s... would be an obvious clue to start a line of questioning there. but really, its not any different than any other festival here. you cant reuse old material. of course somone could manage to slide some in there somewhere without anyone knowing if they really wanted to be a cheating douchbag (..what ..i dont like cheaters :banned: ), but generally speaking its just a dumb idea to do so in the first place. you have a good chance of being caught and earning yourself a suitable reputation, and your not really honing your craft or learning anything by using something old to begin with. and most people who are really growing would rather eat poop than show anybody something thats old anyway because they are so far beyond it now. but yes in the end ..its all scouts honor.
