So I watched my first footage right from the SD card plugged into a friends PS3 on an HD projector. WOW. Yes. It was great.

Does the PS3 remove pulldown for playback of the 1080p footage? I didn't notice any interlace artifacts.

If so, would it be possible record the output of the PS3 into some HD capture device and give you clean, interlace-free footage?

Anyone tried this?

I know it kind-of defeats the purpose of a tapeless cam and workflow, but being on an old G5 makes life hard for AVCHD.

I am a little confused here. Wasn’t the original purpose of pulldown to convert 24 frames of film to 30 frames of video so it would look good on a regular t.v.? So if you have 24p video from the GH1 on the 60i wrapper playing directly from the card with the PS3 wouldn’t it be playing at the process it is intended to, 24 frames telecined to look good on 30 frames? Or something like that? Like I said I am a little confused at this moment with this pulldown stuff!

When I first got the cam and shot for half a day, we first saw the footage using a PS3...and it was jittery. So there must be something up with your PS3...

If you playback the 1080i60 wrapper (containing 3:2 pulldown from 24p) directly via PS3 or HDMI to your TV, it looks great but jittery.

Great, because you will not see any interlace artefacts as they are removed by the TV's deinterlacer.

Jittery, because you will notice 12times a second (3 frames the one frame, 2 times the other frame times 12 to give you 60) a change of motion (i.e. a complete stop) especially with objects moving at constant speed through your video (e.g. cars passing buy). Also direct playback on the camera shows this. Very annoying and not nice.

Nothing wrong here, just a matter of the PS3 and your TV playing the 1080i60 signal as it is (from where should these devices know this still needs pulldown).

If you do a correct pulldown of the 60i signal in postprocessing you get very smooth and nice 24p footage (i.e. reconstructing what the sensor of the cam initially recorded).

best regards,

Gunther

So then the PS3 DOESN'T properly remove pulldown?

I noticed a few hiccups, but didn't really notice that it was jittery.

I bought a PS3 to watch raw .mts files from my Canon HG10 (dragged the clips straight from the BDMV/STREAM folder and burned them to a 4.7 DVD). The HG10 shoots 24P (or F, or whatever they call it) over a 1080 60i stream as well... and from what I've researched/seen on the PS3 is that it does remove the pulldown (inverse telecine) and plays the 24p perfectly - again, this is with my HG10.
I'm hoping this will work the same with the GH1?
