THE MISSION
Last year was a blast and its many successes were quite memorable. This year, we wanted to make sure we were taking a step forward. And so, I was tasked with finding a suitable venue where we could put even more emphasis on high quality cinematic exhibition of the films. I sought out an intimate "movie theater experience" where the films could be projected in 1080 HD. And we found it here...
THE VENUE
Downtown Independent
251 S. Main Street
Los Angeles, CA 90012 [google maps (http://maps.google.com/maps?client=safari&q=251+S.+Main+Street+Los+Angeles,+CA+90012&oe=UTF-8&ie=UTF8&split=0&gl=us&ei=sc8_StirIYOoswPfncUv&z=16&iwloc=A&layer=c&cbll=34.050095,-118.245363&panoid=ziFHy6Brl8d3CDGiYi05Zg&cbp=12,17.73,,0,39.52)]
This theater was completely renovated from the ground up with state of the art, clean and modern amenities. It is so new that Google Street View still only shows how it looked "before" the renovation. I've included more recent photos at the bottom.
The Downtown Independent is an awesome NEW art house theater with two rows of home theater style recliners and stadium seating for the rest. It has a nice big screen and top of the line projection and sound with the following technical specifications:
236 Stadium style seats including 16 reclining sofa seats.
Barco iD H500 digital projector
5.1 Dolby Digital surround sound with JBL loudspeakers, QSC amplification and
Dolby CP650 cinema processor
DATE & TIME
Saturday, July 25th @ 8pm to Midnight
SLATE OF FILMS
Without repeating any of the films that screened last year, we have already selected a handful of noteworthy shorts from past DVXfests and have thrown in what are sure to be some unforgettable surprises too. And of course, the evening will be webcast live as we countdown all the QuestFest finalists, culminating in the top three winners.
PARKING
Street parking is FREE after 6pm. The lot next door is $8 (Welcome to LA, folks!) and CASH ONLY. I would advise coming early enough to grab street parking, or carpooling to share the cost of the lot.
AMENITIES
FREE public WiFi. So bring your laptop and and keep up with the discussion from members watching you over streaming video. ATM Machine in the lobby, so you can freely forget that the parking lot was CASH ONLY until you're pulling in... and panicking.
FOOD NEARBY
There is a Pitfire Pizza (http://www.pitfirepizza.com/flash/pages/locations.html) half a block down on the corner of Main and 2nd. I'll be busy prepping for the screening, but others could grab dinner here beforehand. Unless you plan to fill up on free popcorn.

Don't book your tickets until we give you dates... Until everything is official <knock on wood> anything can happen.
We aren't anticipating problems, but you never know, and we still have a couple more details to hammer before the contract is final. That's why we didn't give dates and times yet :) But, should have them hammered down and out to you folks to make travel arrangements by the end of the week.

I travel with my own box. You should look into the potable ones. They even come equipped with a couch and a fridge sometimes, especially when you plunk it down in the middle of Fat Monster's living room...

Details are pretty well hammered out... Just want to sign on the dotted line before we make this official.
Though, some details for you that the good folks are offering up as added bonuses on the traditional package. Everyone will get a free popcorn, they'll have a drink special running all night, and also are talking about offering up 3 hours use of the space along with a projectionist for free as a door prize.

Dustin, I got your PM asking me to stay home so as not to take away from your "invaluable and awe inspiring attendance," and I was wondering if perhaps you would make an exception if I wear, say, a toilet seat cover around my neck?

Now, once the final date is locked and we inch closer to that time, I will review my financial situation and see if I can make it down. I had a great time last year and I'd love to be there again...if I'm welcome, that is.

Yeah, I'm kind of feeling the same way ... I didn't do the fest last year that also preceded the 1st Annual DVXuser party/screening. Just an annual bad timing, I suppose on my part.

Something can't be first annual. It has to be annual before you can call it annual. :)
Though, I couldn't be there even if I wanted too. The funds just aren't in place for me to get to LA. :(
But, next year - I might be in LA for the summer. Will definitely be there from Jan - May.

Hey guys, I've been absent from DVXuser for a bit while I've been dealing with some other stuff, but this sounds really great. Congrats, it seems like you're putting together a cool event, and I will definitely be there.
And, since this theater is just 3 blocks away from our offices in burgeoning downtown, I'd like to invite people back to our place for an official (or unofficial) afterparty! Let me know if people are interested in this so I know whether or not we need to get booze and treats and all that jazz.
(To be followed, as every night, with Jumbo's Clown Room.)

No panel of judges. Invitations are going out to some heavy-hitters. but no promises. if you come, come for the chance to meet other dvxusers and to see these films at a level of quality like you've never seen. If your film is screening, treat this like a festival and invite anyone you want to impress with your work.

Going to post this here as I need HELP!!!
I have a few questions - Yes, Ive been to LA a few times, but of course I dont know where things are exactly etc.
So, should I just stay in Hollywood? Or do you recommend downtown LA? Or somewhere else? Keeping in mind I dont want to be too far from the event, wouldnt want to get lost trying to get there if I take the Metro from Hollywood for example. Is that a direct line into downtown LA on the Red line btw?
Another question - notice the event isnt far from Little Tokyo, might drop in there on my way through and check it out - worth doing? Safe?
And final question - Anyone want to catch up on the Friday night, grab a bite? Bowling :P Few beers and a chat? As long as I dont have to play drunk air hockey with Tom again Im set :P
Any other out of towners going to be there Friday night? Looking for something to do?
Mike Manning
07-15-2009, 06:57 PM
I would definitely recommend staying in hollywood over downtown... while both are grimy... hollywood is less so and there's definitely more cool things to do. And yes, you can hop on the red line and go straight downtown no problem. I would look for places from Hollywood and Vine, to Hollywood and Highland, or even up to Universal City (as those are prime spots with sh*t to do and the red line runs right through it).

Sadly not this year. As a born and bread San Diegan nerd/filmmaker it breaks the heart not to go. But hey, if you wanna get together afterwards Friday evening let me know, drop me a PM, I could probably coordinate something and get the other few San Diego based dvxusers together for a night out.

Today I did a tech run at the theater, playing back a loop of select clips from the various shorts we're screening Saturday night. Now, I was prepared to see a great image, and i did. It was beautiful. But I was not prepared for how amazing it would sound. I just stood there in the middle of the theater and at one point uttered, "wow".
Guys, this is going to be so amazing. I hope the rest of you are as "wowed" as I was.
Lastly, I added a few more details on parking and food to the first post.
PARKING
Street parking is FREE after 6pm. The lot next door is $8 (Welcome to LA, folks!). I would advise coming early enough to grab street parking, or carpooling to share the cost of the lot.

About the films we'll be screening...
Quite a few people have PM'd me asking what films will be screening Saturday night. And while I'm not going to divulge any titles, I will tell you this evening will highlight some of the most memorable works from past DVXFests, as well as, a few forgotten treasures. It's also a great opportunity to see works produced on the Red One, HVX200, EX-1, HV20, D90, GH1 back to back to back.
We've got everything from hard-hitting action and suspense to beautifully rendered human drama. And one filmmaker in particular is debuting a special sneak preview of an expanded cut of his DVXfest short – finished just in time for our screening. You're amongst the very first to see it.
Then of course we countdown thru all eight finalists to the top three winners of QuestFest. Feel free to cheer and shout all night long while rubbing elbows with fellow DVXers. It's going to be a fun time.
Myself, and a few other members of the Sabi Pictures family will be there to answer questions and oversee the smooth coordination of the event.

Please could someone snap a bunch of BTS stuff to post so us webcast viewers can see all the fun we missed? I'm sure one of you guys/gals could get some classic shots at the event & after parties!
Thanks in advance.....

Waiting for my flight. I think I;ve found he best in flight diversion: watching all of the Quest Fest films and reviewing the ones I missed. Finally have time to myself, no clients calling, no baby to play with (gonna miss that one)... just me and your movies....
MUHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!
I promise I'll be gentle...

... ATM Machine in the lobby, so you can freely forget that the parking lot was CASH ONLY until you're pulling in... and panicking.
When I panic, I usually pull-out... :undecided

So remember that exploit warning we've been getting all day? There went my viewing. Turned on the laptop, plugged in my headphones... warning from windows... couldn't find a file needed to boot.
Reinstalling windows at 33000ft has never been so much fun...
I'm now stuck in Houston for the night, since my flight got delayed and then had to run across the airport only to find out that I'd run for nothing. So time to try viewing again after I get my Quicktime reinstalled...

Just a heads up to you webcast folk... We'll have some stuff to give away to you as well watching from home.
Just keep an eye out closer to the screening, and Larry will have something set up to put your name in the hat... but you'll have to be watching the screening at the time that we give 'em away...
Few hundred dollars worth of stuff to go to some lucky folks watching from home... Thanks to Tim at indifocus, who is also a big part of the reason that the screening is even possible tonight.
later,
Jason

we'll have t-shirts and miscellaneous things to give away at the screening, as well as 4 prizes from indifocus, and 10 dvrebel's guide books. I'll try to split the love equally and randomly between folks in the building and folks watching from home.
Downtown independent will also be giving away a door prize during the event. 3 hours free use of their theatre for a venue of your own.
Later,
Jason

Bad news and acceptable news: pretty much everyone I know in the world is either at ComicCon or the cemetery tonight, and the starter's out on my car. So it took me 30 minutes to track down a ride and it'll probably be another 30 minutes before he's here. So I'll probably be missing most or all of the screening.
The acceptable news is that I'm still coming and will still throw open the doors for the afterparty! So hopefully I still still see most of you soon.
when is it going to start?
