So uh I tried to register an account and requires I put in a japanese address...damn...

Anyone uh...know a work around LOL.

I wonder if a firmware update/hack can make a certain camera's menu in english.

And even with shipping, it's still like 200 bucks cheaper.

Funny they give discounts on the pink and gold versions vs. the black.

AFAIK it does have English menus (camera I mean).

My GH1 is a Japanese model and the menus are Japanese only, with no option to switch it to English.

The external buttons and controls are labeled in English, though.

I would imagine you can load the new english firmware on the japanese camera. Someone needs to test it though.

For amazon.jp, they wont ship the cam to the US. I know someone in Japan that I will most likely use to ship the camera to me from amazon or possibly another place that is cheaper.

Just so you know, you cannot change the menus to English (or any other language) even with a firmware update.
The domestic Japanese models are ONLY Japanese unfortunately.

By the way, the reason the red and gold are cheaper is because there is much more demand for black. They are pretty much sold out everywhere here.
I'm trying to decide whether to wait for a black or just get a red.

Well magically the GH1 made it into my amazon Goldbox (USA) today. Is this whole GH1 thing mocking me or what lol, thats $75 off. I say that because my Panny direct from 5/15 just shipped after some people who ordered in June got theirs last week. Yeah I'm sour about this whole GH1 purchase "experience".

Regarding switching language, it is not possible on the newer Panny cameras. There's a certain control board that sets the camera region. If for some reason they replace that board due to a repair, the region can be set only ONCE and cannot be set again. Like a write once thing. FW update cannot do it.

All languages are in the camera it seems. We just need some super hacker to unlock it all.

Kiri,

Are you in Tokyo? I was at Yodobashi in Akihbara again the day before yesterday, and they still had black GH1 kits.

Kevin, I'm in Osaka.
How much were they selling the black ones for though?
I think there are some places here with black ones still, but they are way overpriced. I've seen shops selling the black ones for 30 000yen more than red ones!

This is true. Someone tried it with a Japanese G1 - no success! :lipsrseal

why do you say even with a firmware update?

because panasonic didn't want people buying the japanese model at a cheaper price and putting english menu's on it, thats why no firmware update will fix it, because panasonic made sure it was that way

how are either of you certain? fyi they both cost the same USD.

This is how it works with their other products,projectors,etc.. what do you mean the same price? maybe if you paid some ripoff price, currently the cheapest price in japan is around US1050.00

the gh1 body in japan amazon was $929.00 body only, but has since been pulled from their site. but the states doesn't sell body only. kit lens and body was going for $1500 in japan, same as US. you really can't state fact that the firmware update won't give it english menus unless proven otherwise.

allright somebody put up a hack site on the gh1 to dump the english menu and fix the bitrate lol.

You can try to update the firmware with English menu if you want... but it wont work :)
People have tried this with several panasonic cameras. Same as the sony ones I think. The company releases an international version and a domestic version. The domestic one is Japanese only. Do a google search about it if you don't believe us.

The Japanese gh1 kit can be had for under US$1000 now, but only Japanese. As opposed to the international version which I believe is closer to US$1500?

it's not that i believe or disbelieve either of you, but some people have had i guess better luck with loading a english firmware in japanese products before and had english menus. my point is you can't state it as fact until it's actually been done.

and the cheapest gh1 in japan, by amazon, is $1184.00 for red and gold. the black is marked at $1400.00. there is no selection for the states yet. it's been out for over what 2 months in japan??, of course it's going to be a penny cheaper it being out longer. so that's pretty close to what USD would be if it were released here.

Well, the cheapest right now is 1049$ (99,880Yen). According to kakaku.com

Just a note on the Japanese prices:

Amazon.co.jp's cheapest price of 114,000 yen is a used camera in their marketplace. New camera kits are 129,800 yen.

And most of (if not all) the cheapest kakaku.com prices are -cash only- prices. If you want to pay by credit card, expect to pay an additional 5% plus shipping. (most of those places are just mail order warehouses, so you can't just walk in an buy the item... I've tried a number of times and it really depends on the shop)
